The Company

My client is a privately owned NZ tech company that started circa 10 years ago. Having pivoted with their service offering and gaining VC funding the business is now in an exciting time gaining traction fast. They have secured a significant Australian contract and have a major US contract about to be signed with another in negotiation stages. The company has gone through the initial start up phase and are now profitable and in growth mode. The offering is in a niche industry space and with a brand name that is reputable, this company has an exciting story to tell.

The Role

The role of CFO is newly created and will report directly to the CEO. The company is in the throes of pulling together a commercial leadership team that will drive the business forward. This role is an integral part of this SLT. Your key responsibilities will include:y

  • Be an active member of the SLT
  • Provide oversight and leadership to the Finance team who are based in Dunedin. This will require some travel from Auckland on an ongoing basis.
  • Drive commercial insights into strategic decisions and help monetise future product development
  • Provide commercial input into future RFP and contract negotiations
  • Model pricing alternative to New product development
  • Prepare budgeting & forecasting
  • Drive treasury & hedging policies and cashflow initiatives
  • Oversee the integrity of the financial reporting, internal controls and compliance frameworks
  • Drive continuous improvement and process reviews as required
  • Other ad hoc duties as required


Skills & Experience

We are looking for someone who is qualified who has operated at this level previously. You need to demonstrate the following attributes:
  • A commercial mindset to grow the business
  • A hunger & passion for tech and start up mentality(phase2)
  • An ability to think laterally where nothing is perfect but outcome focused
  • An ability to work autonomously with little direction
  • International markets experience would be preferable
  • Strong financial acumen and proven experience overseeing a Finance function
  • An ability to work in an unstructured environment
  • Strong modelling skills
  • Proven leadership skills
  • An ability to build strong relationship skills both internally & externally.


There is some travel required to Dunedin in this role on an on-going basis. The SLT are predominantly based in the office but are outcome focused so flexibility and some WFH can definitely be accommodated.
