ESM Prep is an organization driven by its mission to provide holistic mentorship and expert guidance to high school students and their families. The Accounting Manager will be integral to helping ESM deliver on its mission by managing the financial well-being of the company.

The Accounting Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day activities of the accounting department. Those activities include accounting for multiple legal entities and the consolidation of those entities. The Accounting Manager is responsible for timely and accurate financial reporting by developing and implementing systems for collecting, analyzing, verifying and reporting information. This role will also work closely with our financial management team, our Inventory and Materials team as well as the Chief Financial Officer. The Accounting Manager will be responsible for overseeing the accounting operations, ensuring the general ledger and respective accounts are updated appropriately in compliance, maintain internal controls, manage the annual audit, reconcile various accounts, produce supporting schedules, and prepare the financial statements amongst other duties as needed. The position reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer, and we are currently seeking the ideal candidate who can work in a hybrid role (at least two days per week) from our headquarters in Sacramento, California.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Manages the accounting staff who are responsible for the monthly close process, financial reporting, billing, collections, payroll, and budget preparation. Current staff includes one full time staff accountant and one remote contractor overseeing accounting for the UK entities.

Duties:

  • Manage and oversee the daily operations of the accounting department including:
    • Monthly close within seven business days and end-year close process
    • Consolidation of multiple entities
    • accounts payable/receivable
    • cash receipts
    • general ledger
    • payroll and utilities
    • capital assets reconciliations
    • check runs
    • fixed asset activity
    • debt activity
    • M&A transaction accounting including Purchase Price Allocation, Goodwill and opening balance sheet establishment
  • Monitor and analyze accounting data and produce financial reports or statements
  • Establishes internal controls and guidelines for accounting transactions and budget preparation.
  • Oversees the production of periodic financial reports; ensures that the reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles or financial reporting standards.  
  • Audits accounts to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations; coordinates with outside auditors and provides needed information for the annual external audit.
  • Presents recommendations to management on short- and long-term financial objectives and policies.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements.
  • Improve systems and procedures and initiate corrective actions
  • Assign projects and direct staff to ensure compliance and accuracy
  • Establish and maintain fiscal files and records to document transactions
  • Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned. 

Required Skills:

  • Proven knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting principles, practices, standards, laws and regulations
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent management and supervisory skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficient in accounting software, preferably experienced with Sage Intacct.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration required.
  • Seven years or more of related experience required.
  • Certified Public Accountant designation recommended, though not required.
