THE COUNCIL

The Waitaki District Council was created in 1989 and is the only district in the South Island that lies within two regions, stretching all the way from the coastline at Kakanui almost to the foot of Mt Cook, Aoraki. The Council provides a huge range of facilities and services for a population of over 20,000 residents, with Oamaru being Waitaki's main town.

LOCATION

The Waitaki District offers a range of outdoor attractions and activities including ski fields, Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Track, tramping trails, fishing and hunting, surf beaches, rivers, and lakes! The area is well known for their penguin colonies, Victorian Precinct's architecture, award-winning restaurants, and locally crafted artisan cheeses. Oamaru is centrally based with Dunedin a one-and-a-half-hour drive via the Pacific Coast Highway, Christchurch three hours north, and Central Otago a quick two-and-a-half-hour drive through the picturesque Lindis Pass.

THE ROLE

This is a newly created role within Council providing strategic financial leadership across all aspects of the organisation including key transformational change projects. You will be leading a team of 9 staff to provide financial insights & advice to decision makers (Elected members, council committees and community boards & officers of council) to ensure most effective & efficient use of the council's financial resources.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • Review & improve financial systems & processes ensuring best practice is implemented
  • Develop business cases, budget management & financial forecasting / analysis for stakeholders
  • Lead the accounting team & function through transformational change
  • Develop and implement the organisation's Financial Strategy to assist the Council to identify, develop, communicate and achieve its strategic goals


ABOUT THE SUCCESSFUL CANDDIATE

You will have proven experience developing & implementing best practice financial management in a complex environment with the ability to lead teams through change and organisation wide transformation. You will naturally have a collaborative approach to strategy development and be comfortable working with the Executive Leadership Team and relevant stakeholders across the business.
