OVERVIEW:

The Director of Finance is responsible for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis’ annual financial planning, accounting, purchasing, payroll processing oversight, financial risk management, and budget management functions. The incumbent works at the direction of the CFO, CEO, and Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees to oversee and manage the financial affairs of the organization and prepare financial analyses of operations, with supporting schedules, for multiple entities. They direct and ensure ongoing effectiveness of systems, policies, and procedures that support the general accounting, financial planning and analysis, tax, audit, budget management, and key financial functions of Museum.

REPORTS TO: Chief Financial Officer

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Manages, monitors, and measures benchmarks for the financial and operating performance of the Museum. Directs, communicates and monitors the museum financial planning and budget management functions. Monitors and analyzes monthly operating results against budget; makes recommendations as to necessary adjustments to appropriate leadership staff.
  2. Leads and oversees the Finance and Centralized Purchasing department staff and volunteers. Including establishing and maintaining an organizational structure and staffing levels to effectively accomplish the department's goals and objectives.  Mentors direct reporting staff and provide appropriate professional development and feedback.
  3. Updates, reviews, establishes and implements short- and long-range finance and accounting plans that support effective operating procedures, organizational and department goals, and strategic objectives. Proactively facilitates and fosters appropriate stewardship of organizational financial resources to achieve targeted outcomes; ensuring compliance and appropriate controls are in place. Manages the preparation and distribution of monthly and quarterly comprehensive organizational financial reports, include GL close and financial statement reconciliations.
  4. Oversees payroll processing, reporting, and system administration. Working in concert with Director of HR, ensures that Museum’s payroll related procedures are administered consistently in compliance with applicable laws and museum policies in a timely manner.
  5. Supports and contributes to work of internal Benefits Committee. Assists in fulfilling fiduciary responsibilities for retirement plan by helping to provide financial oversight, analysis, counsel, education, and insights.
  6. Assists the CFO with management and administration for investments of The Children’s Museum’s endowment.
  7. Establishes, maintains, and coordinates the implementation of accounting and accounting control procedures. Oversees the tax planning and compliance. Ensures that the accounting procedures conform to generally accepted accounting principles and comply with museum accounting policies and practices. Establishes and maintains relations with banks and financial institutions.
  8. Leads M-Team on year-end financial audit process(es). This includes responsibilities for review, preparation, and/or oversight for audit work papers for review by CFO and external auditors.
  9. Works with external accountants and internal colleagues to complete filing of tax returns and preparation of supporting work papers. This includes 990, 990T, property tax, and related state filings for alternative investments.
  10. Contributes to, develops, and/or provides appropriate updates and development of finance related staff trainings to support organizational goals for financial stewardship.
  11. In collaboration with CFO, ensures sound financial data governance practices, systems, processes, procedures, technology and policies are in place and consistently adhered to. 

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance. CPA certification and/or MBA preferred.
  2. Six (6) years’ experience in a leadership capacity within the finance function; three (3) years management experience within the not-for-profit sector.
  3. Proven familiarity with activity/fund based accounting concepts and systems. Demonstrated understanding of accrual accounting concepts.
  4. Demonstrated sound knowledge of various computer software applications and technology including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and computer based accounting and finance system. Must embrace learning new technology as needed to serve Museum’s needs. Sound knowledge and abilities in complex spreadsheet applications and advanced formulas.
  5. Must have demonstrated prior leadership, skills, knowledge and understanding in financial regulations, laws and standard practice and the ability to motivate and retain a highly diverse, skilled professional staff with expertise in such areas.
  6. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively and translate financial concepts and results to staff at all levels.
  7. Requires mature leadership capabilities within a participatory management environment. Must value diversity and display openness to questions and to being a resource and mentor to others within the team.
  8. Must have a rich understanding of educational learning environments, as well as the non-profit industry as a whole.
  9. Demands the capacity to work in a fast paced, intense environment and the ability to multi-task and adeptly shift priorities.
  10. Requires the ability to negotiate and mediate at all levels, to be sensitive to differing viewpoints, and to be proactive and anticipate.

ADA REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Must be able to view highly detailed documents and prepare or manage computer generated schedules, reports and documents.
  2. Must be able to communicate extensively via telephone and one-on-one conversations. Must also conduct a wide variety of small to large group presentations.
  3. Must be able to tolerate heavy keyboard and calculator usage and extensive document, report and presentation preparation.
  4. Must be able to navigate throughout the museum, conduct business in various settings. Requires sitting and standing for extended periods of time. Some travel both local and out-of-town is also required to attend meetings and conferences.
