The National Audit Office (NAO) is the UKs independent public spending watchdog.

We support Parliament in holding government to account and we help improve public services through our high-quality audits.

The Head of Reporting reports to the Director of Strategy, within the Corporate Strategy and Advice Team at the NAO.The Head of Reporting supports the NAO Board, Executive Team, Director of Strategy and senior management to understand our organisational performance and financial position. The role is central to proactive financial management of the organisation through the development of high-quality data and developing and maintaining relationships throughout the organisation to support effective decision-making. The role leads a team of three Finance and Reporting Business Partners, who lead relationships with different operational units in the NAO.
ResponsibilitiesReporting
Lead on the maintenance and future development of the organisations performance framework.
To provide the Executive Team and the Board with regular assessments of our corporate performance. This includes:
Attending Board and Executive Team meetings to present the performance reports for the business.
Leading the production of organisational performance reporting that goes to the Board and Executive Team.
Coordinating the data returns from across the business on our performance against our KPIs.
Refining performance reporting to the Board and Executive Team based on feedback.
Continuing to refine how the data is presented.
Working with digital services and the analysis discipline on the continuing automation of the balanced scorecard.

Financial Management and Business Partnering
To support effective and proactive financial management in the organisation. This includes:
Embedding and realising the benefits from Finance and Reporting Business Partnering. This includes:
Management and coaching of the finance business partners.
Improving how business partnering is embedded in the NAOs operational units with Executive Directors and other senior managers.
Escalating financial management concerns on a timely basis to the Finance Director and Head of Finance.
Overseeing the production of monthly performance and financial information for the NAOs operational units on budgets, profiles and outturn; and continuous improvement of this information and its presentation.
Providing input into management accounts on financial risks and the quality of financial information provided by the NAOs operational units.Provide ad-hoc performance reporting support to Executive Directors on organisational performance.Working with the Head of Governance and Risk to ensure performance and risk reporting is integrated.
Developing and enhancing our systems to improve our performance reporting. This includes:
ownership of system development, collaborating with digital services and other colleagues;
providing input into the development cycles of business intelligence and financial force to ensure we have the management information needed; and
close liaison with the service line heads to ensure our project management systems are optimised for business users.
Attending monthly forecast and management account meetings with the Head of Finance, the Finance Director and the ED Strategy and Resources.

Key Internal and External Relationships/Resources Managed
The postholder will need to maintain the confidence of executive and senior management and to develop strong working relationships across the NAO.
The postholder will manage a team of three Finance and Reporting Business Partners.
Skills and experienceWe require the following key skills, experience and competencies:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and strong proven ability to work collaboratively and comfortably with all areas of the organisation, including senior management.
Strong understanding of organisational strategy and performance measurement and reporting in order to assess and report effectively on operational and strategic performance.
Proven ability to make sound independent judgements to work through challenges and to act with authority when advising others.
Strong management, coaching and team leadership skills to lead and motivate diverse teams and provide the conditions for all colleagues to fulfil their potential.
Excellent project management skills.
Proven ability to interpret data into information and clear insights.
Good understanding of systems including Salesforce and Business Intelligence.
Good understanding of audit in the context of the National Audit Office.
