Job Specification:

Aerospace cost engineering requires the understanding of manufacturing and engineering activities in order to better estimate the recurring and non-recurring costs associated with aircraft design. Costing activities are highly collaborative which require a partnering approach with experts from other disciplines such as engineering, manufacturing engineering and procurement.

You will be involved in pioneering the future by creating cost models to influence aircraft designs as early as possible in the product life cycle. These cost models allow us to estimate the product (eg wing structure, landing gear system) or a technology. As well as modelling traditional technologies, such as machining or forging, models need to be created for new aerospace technologies, such as additive manufacturing and linear friction welding.

This role will incorporate delivering costs estimates to the Procurement function and act as a business partner and advisor in order to support negotiation phases with suppliers. Cost estimates will also be delivered to Programme and Engineering functions in order to influence Aircraft development activity.

There will be an opportunity to employ data science skills and techniques on the latest digital costing tools and methods. The digitalization of costing methods has created the opportunity to unlock the potential of the costing data, develop advanced cost models and robust referential data.

The placement will provide you with experience of all roles within the Costing department giving a great visibility of the manufacturing, systems and engineering costing disciplines. During the scheme there will also be placements in a variety of departments to build on core skills, develop project management and leadership skills, broaden aerospace knowledge and perform transnational working. It is also encouraged to participate in the STEM projects opportunities aimed at inspiring the engineers of the future.

About us:

The Cost Engineering team utilizes a wide spectrum of business, technical and soft skills to provide value to the full portfolio Airbus products. The Costing team creates and builds cost information all along the product life cycle: from the concept phase (R&T); through to Design-to-cost and modification negotiations with suppliers on existing aircraft. We work transnationally alongside manufacturing and engineering functions to provide accurate cost evaluations to influence decision making on aircraft design as early as possible in the product life cycle. Our specialist engineering expertise and costing knowledge is employed to develop and maintain cost engineering methodologies and data references. Our work is a vital part of creating successful and profitable products for Airbus and allows Airbus to make key strategic decisions at the highest levels of the company.

What you will be doing:

Costing consists of a diverse set of activities, the proportion of which is unique to each person’s role and skills. Typical examples include:

  • Develop reference information to support all cost estimations and allow effective business decisions to be made

  • Producing cost estimations for aircraft manufacturing, systems and design process

  • Develop fit for purpose cost models using the most appropriate method, such as a bottom-up approach, surrogate modelling or machine learning

  • Perform cost analysis to provide the customer with the appropriate levers to improve the cost basis of the aircrafts, whether that is for architects in the design of new aircraft or for procurement in supplier negotiations

  • Develop cost knowledge for new technologies

These activities are built upon a foundation of business and soft skills which will be enhanced through costing activities: project management; negotiation; influencing; data science; business partnering.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • The ability to listen, understand and communicate complex information succinctly

  • A strong interest in developing yourself

  • The desire to work in a collaborative team environment

  • Educated to either degree level (2:1 or above) or equivalent within one the following disciplines: Production/Manufacturing Engineering; Aerospace engineering; General Engineering; Aviation Engineer; or Data Science

  • An understanding of Aerospace products, your wider interest in the aerospace industry and motivation for this sector.

  • Ideal applicants will demonstrate previous experience of organizing events or projects resulting in the delivery of added value to the business to time, cost and quality targets.

  • Fluency in English is required, any additional languages will be viewed positively.

Please ensure that a cover letter detailing motivations and suitability for this position is included in your application.

Please note, we love your interest in working for Airbus but we do ask that you make only one application to the Airbus Global Graduate Programme. We encourage you to take time to decide which of our exciting opportunities is right for you and then submit an application that best represents you, your skills and experience in connection with the role you have selected.

The Job Posting will be open until the 18th of October 2022. Please note that depending on the number of applicants the posting can be taken offline earlier or be kept open longer. If you are interested we would advise you to apply as soon as possible.

This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Company’s success, reputation and sustainable growth.
