We have a distributed team across the United States and are headquartered in a historic general store building in the village of Hartland, Vermont, located within the Upper Valley Region of New England and close to Dartmouth College.

About the role:

The Controller will lead the accounting and finance functions and work closely with the Director of Finance and other organizational leads to lay the financial foundation for our next phase of growth. This role is a middle management position that reports to the Director of Finance. The Controller will focus on creating, documenting, and maintaining new financial processes and infrastructure to improve flexibility and enable our organization to successfully scale from $7 million to $10 million in revenue by the end of 2023.

This is a formative and exciting time for RISI as we build out the accounting function within the organization and implement increased visibility, controls and accountability into our financials and business metrics. Your technical expertise and business acumen will complement and enhance a focused team of startup professionals.

The Controller will:

  • Manage all aspects of accounting, financial reporting, restricted fund management, payroll, audit, taxation, treasury, and the refinement and development of financial policies and procedures for eight entities (non-profit, taxable, real estate LLC’s, etc.).
  • Plan, implement and manage the monthly close process for all entities.
  • Utilize our newly implemented Sage Intacct financial system to develop, prepare and maintain timely and insightful operational and financial performance reports for management, funders, real estate investors, etc.
  • Observe and analyze financial data on a regular basis to assist with expansion decisions, lower costs, set pricing, increase margin, and grow the business.
  • Coordinate or prepare monthly/quarterly filings and yearly tax returns, periodic governmental filings, registrations, business, and tax licenses, etc.
  • Prepare year-end working papers for each entity to be submitted to an independent CPA firm for auditing and income tax preparation.
  • Partner with team leads and assist with establishing, updating and implementing all necessary business policies and accounting practices to continually improve internal controls, ensuring compliance with current laws and updated accounting rules and regulations.
  • Lead, mentor, and oversee the activities of the Finance Manager, who currently performs day- to-date payroll, AP/AR, bank reconciliations, and certain cash management functions.
  • Liaise with suppliers/customers, governmental agencies, and professional service providers, as necessary.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in Accounting or Finance; MBA or CPA preferred
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience maintaining or auditing the financial records of a multi-entity enterprise
  • Strong operational and technical understanding of GAAP, internal controls, internal & external reporting, and audit processes
  • Experience with Sage Intacct preferred
  • Exceptional communication skills, internally and externally across all levels
  • Technical expertise using Google Suite, web-based collaboration and project management tools, and virtual presentation platforms
  • Ability to work effectively, collaboratively and independently in a remote team environment
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to meet hard deadlines
