Who we are looking for:
 

ASCO is seeking a high performing Tax Manager to join our Finance team. The Tax Manager will assure that ASCO complies with not-for-profit federal, state, and local tax filing requirements for all of its legal entities and that taxes are appropriately accrued and accounted for in the accounting system. This position will respond to state and federal agency queries, and provide expert tax advice on the tax status of various product offerings, requirement to collect sales tax, and other taxation issues

 

 

 

This position is located in Alexandria, VA although remote candidates will be considered.

 

 

 

What you will do:
 

 

  • Understand the revenue sources, programs, and expenses for each of the legal entities (and any additional entities formed) and assure appropriate reporting on tax returns including adjustments that need to be made between GAAP and IRS reporting. Evaluate various product offerings to determine if revenue needs to be included in unrelated business taxable income (UBTI) or if subject to sales tax. Maintain knowledge of tax regulations applicable to tax exempt organizations and apply to ASCO’s tax reporting Develop appropriate designation of direct and allocated costs that may be deducted against UBTI, assist in implementing coding or other methodology to easily capture the costs, and work with accounting staff on the structure of chart accounts to assure ability to easily extract financial information needed for tax filing Provide tax estimates for budgets, forecasts, and calculate and prepare estimated tax payment filings and tax return extension requests.  Support financial audit with preparation of tax memo. Manage the timely and accurate preparation of income tax returns including working with accounting, legal, program departments, and outside tax advisors to collect information. Respond to and follow up on federal and state tax authority correspondence to assure resolution of any issues Manage state sales tax exemption filings, local business license tax and property tax filings, and other registrations Review, update, and create processes to ensure organization-wide tax compliance Assist with federal and state tax audits for direct and indirect taxes, when needed Support various special projects and assist with ad hoc tax assignments as needed in all areas of tax, including assistance with research and development studies

 

 

What you will need to be successful:

 

 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree institution in Finance, Accounting, or related field Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Tax Preparer 5 – 6 + years in the preparation of tax-exempt organization tax returns Federal, state, and local income and multi-state tax experience including compliance and tax audits In-depth knowledge of tax law as it applies to not-for-profit organizations as well as US GAAP and accounting standards. Proficient use of technology including enterprise/general ledger (GL) systems, tax return preparation applications such as Axcess, and Excel. Experience extracting needed data from accounting systems Outstanding communication skills, including conveying tax requirements to non-tax professionals and ability to develop good working relationships with parties involved in collecting or providing information for tax reporting.  Self-starter with ability to prioritize tasks and independently define, implement, and manage creation of new processes. Ability to analyze and resolve extremely complex problems requiring the application of tax, accounting, technical or management principles, theories, and concepts. Ability to make judgements regarding reasonable allocation methods or approaches to areas that do not have specific guidance. Comfortable functioning as a subject matter expert. Ability to manage tax accounting firm and other professional service providers Demonstrated attention to detail, thoroughness, accuracy, and organizational skills with respect for deadlines.

 

 

Ideal candidates will also contribute:

 

  • Experience working for a CPA firm with broad exposure to various types of tax-exempt organizations Experience with Workday, Oracle Cloud Financials, a plus

May be asked to travel to ASCO HQ in Alexandria, Virginia up to four times a year.
