The Group Reporting team is at the heart of M&S Finance and accountable for the delivery of timely, accurate and relevant financial information to the Executive Committee, Audit Committee, Board and to our shareholders.

We are looking for an inquisitive chartered accountant, who is passionate about working within the Retail industry and keen to pursue a Group level finance role.
Key Accountabilities:
  • Operating key monthly consolidation processes, including key controls and preparing monthly consolidation journals and journals for centrally held accounting items
  • Preparing key Group level inputs (balance sheet, working capital and income statement) to be included in the monthly management accounts, as well as Group level review ahead of publication to the Executive Committee
  • Preparing statutory accounts for the more complex/judgemental UK subsidiaries
  • Assisting with the preparation of Group level impairment reviews of goodwill, brands, and investments
  • Assisting with providing ad hoc technical accounting support to the business, including helping to identify potential accounting implications of business initiatives/decisions
  • Preparing accounting for Group owned areas (e.g., pensions and share schemes) including preparing budgets, forecasts and monthly journals, including relationships with relevant non-finance internal teams and external specialists
  • Driving the best ways of working with process and finance systems, working as the Group reporting representative alongside Finance Systems and Business Unit finance teams
  • Acting as a key point of contact for our external auditors

In addition, this role will be directly involved in other core activities of the Group Reporting team, which includes preparing for year end and interim Group financial documents, monthly management report and preparation of Audit committee papers.
Key Skills:
Business Knowledge & Expertise:
  • Qualified Chartered accountant
  • Experience of large FTSE listed consolidations under IFRS
  • Strong financial modelling and analytical skills with an ability to appropriately challenge

Problem solving:
  • Will challenge the current situation, and a drive for continuous improvement
  • Confident with large volumes of data and able to demonstrate strong analytical skills and generate logical solutions

Interpersonal:
  • Able to communicate effectively, both written and verbal - you will be responding to queries from finance colleagues at varying levels of seniority
  • Ability to translate technical accounting issues into simple concepts and language for a non-finance/technical audience
  • Support with finance projects, often working with across different teams withing finance to navigate complexity and ambiguity
