The Deakin University Research Finance team are currently recruiting for an Assistant Accountant. Reporting to the Senior Management Accountant, this role supports some of the worlds leading researchers, and works under the guidance of the broader team to provide excellent end to end management of research funding. Your key responsibilities will include:
  • Provide assistance with the preparation, tracking and monitoring of annual budget submissions, quarterly forecasting, adhoc reporting, analysis and interpretation of variances, month end close, year-end accruals.
  • Strive for excellence and consult regularly with clients to clarify who requires the information, the purpose for which it is required, criteria for success and where and when advice and recommendation is required
  • Ensure financial transactions reflect, and are in accordance with, grant and contract funding rules and compliant with Deakin policies. Adhere to best practise end-to-end grant accounting processes that ensure all associated financial transactions are administered efficiently, effectively, accurately, and fully reconcilable.
  • Alongside Researcher and Deakin Research team, responsible for creating, maintaining and ensuring research project data and details are reflected accurately across various systems.
  • Prepare, analyse and initiate approval of monthly, annual and end of project research acquittals, including review with Researcher. Assist in the provision of information or investigation with respect to audit queries and requests.
  • Build new and productive relationships with a diverse range stakeholders, including promoting awareness of Research systems, tools & policies with relevant customers and stakeholders
  • Plan and prioritises work and critical activities appropriately and recognises barriers to achieving outcomes, finds effective ways to deal with them and evaluates progress

To be successful, you'll have:
  • A degree, preferably in Business, Finance, Office Administration with subsequent relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant work experience and/or education/training.
  • Demonstrated accounting knowledge and experience, including preparation and monitoring of complex budgets and producing financial reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse range of academic staff with differing levels of financial knowledge and differing levels of understanding of research management guidelines which must be adhered to.
  • Experience in assisting with managing finances for a medium to large organisation and utilising financial management information systems, preferably in a higher education environment.
