Assistant Controller Responsibilities:
Prepare and review journal entries and account reconciliations.
Maintain monthly / quarterly / yearly reporting calendar and coordinate closes.
Record investment, track gift and endowment activity, and maintain all supporting schedules.
Responsible for the accounting for contributions and pledges, including reconciliation to Advancement reports.
Maintain fixed asset records by recording new assets, depreciation, impairment, and disposals.
Prepare monthly financial statements, management / board reports and trend analysis in accordance with GAAP guidelines and industry standards.
Support preparation of annual budget and provide monthly and ad hoc budget reports to budget managers, assisting them with questions and in resource management.
Prepare scheduled and ad hoc reports and analysis including budget reports throughout the year.
Prepare regulatory and tax reporting as required (571-L, welfare exemption filings, etc.).
Support the annual financial audit, including providing requested schedules and year-end closing data as required.
Support procedural updates while continuously identifying areas where procedures can be further improved.
Review payroll journal entries.
Review weekly check runs.
Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable.
Coordinate interfaces between the accounting system and related applications; lead team in solutions if issues develop.
Act as a liaison between the Business Office and other departments by providing outstanding service to parents, students, employees, school leadership, and the community.
Assistant Controller Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or in Business with emphasis in Accounting or closely related field
Five (5) years of progressive senior-level accounting experience;
Extensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and any revenue recognition around contributed revenue a plus
Work experience in accounting and reporting for pledges, contributions and endowments while maintaining GAAP and regulatory requirements a plus
Proven success in producing accounting entries, reports and audit deliverables in accordance with GAAP
Ability to manage fiscal non-profit audits and 990 preparation
Proven ability to enhance and streamline processes and transition the Finance Department to an electronic/paperless environment
Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team and community
Organizational budgeting proficiency, including but not limited to financial analysis
Sophisticated understanding of enterprise level technology
A clear commitment to the educational philosophy of the school and professional behavior based in the Goals and Criteria
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Expert level user of Microsoft Office programs, especially MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
