Education Head of Finance for thriving South Coast Academy Trust

A thriving Academy Trust on the south coast of England with 16 current schools, 4927 children and 706 staff are looking to appoint a highly skilled and dedicated Head of Finance to provide strategic leadership of our Trust finances. Please note the successful candidate could work from either of the Chichester or Eastbourne offices.

Description

To provide day-to-day financial management for the academy trust and strategic management support to all schools within the Trust.

To lead on all statutory returns, budget setting/monitoring and year-end requirements.

Lead on training and development for existing and new staff.

The Head of Finance will work in close co-operation with the Chief Operating Officer to ensure that an appropriate financial policy framework is in place to guide the Trust's financial decision making.

Act as the Deputy Chief Finance Officer.

The overall performance of the Trust finance function, including line management as identified.

Leadership and direction of the finance service across the Trust, ensuring a customer-led approach, support for Central Trust teams and the training of new finance-facing employees.

Effective financial management across the Trust

Lead the development of sustainable, effective budgets across our schools which support a focus on school improvement and outcomes for children.

To advise the Board on financial implications of Trust operations; providing reports as required.

Responsible for the strategic and operational management of our financial operations.

Work closely with the Trust Executive Leadership Team, providing insight and advice; consistently focusing on the developments that will enable pupils, staff and thus schools to flourish and succeed.

To attend the Trust Audit & Resources Committee as required.

Support the wider strategic vision of the Trust always acting as an advocate and ambassador for the Trust.

To provide various KPIs and analysis in supporting decision making, including forecasting, and strategic planning

Oversee the preparation, and submission, of accurate and timely financial reports, estimates, and financial / annual returns as required by funding bodies, government departments and Companies House.

Ensure that the Trust complies with the obligations and responsibilities as set out by the ESFA in the latest version of the Academies Financial Handbook.

Lead on the Internal and External Audits across the Trust

Support on the identification of key financial risks and their mitigations as part of the Trust wide risk matrix and risk management process.

Manage the Trust finance team to deliver high quality services to the Trust and ensure best practice is observed throughout.

Work in collaboration with the individual School Business Managers or academy finance staff, particularly on embedding strong financial governance within the academies.

Lead on embedding agreed Internal and External audit recommendations.

Have overall leadership responsibility for the financial team, managing all links between Finance and other areas of Trust business operations, e.g. HR, Facilities, IT.

Attend the Headteacher Leadership Group Meetings, Heads of Area meetings and any other Trust meetings as required.

Line manage the central finance team, including all aspects of performance management

Motivate, coach and mentor colleagues as appropriate to ensure a continued path of development for all.

Profile

A professional finance or finance related qualification at graduate level (ie ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA, MAAT) or equivalent

Evidence of strategic financial planning

Evidence of being able to input to strategic decision making, able to analyse, interpret, resolve and communicate complex business problems

Significant experience of working at a senior financial management level, with responsibility of budgets in excess of £5,000,000.

In depth knowledge of statutory requirements, procedures and regulatory requirements relating to key service area(s)

The ability to produce effective reports, forecast expenditure, and demonstrate expense to budget year to date.

Experience of working with external partners/stakeholders

Evidence of successful management and team leadership

Understanding of legislation relating to academies
