ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the Controller in supervising, supporting, and coaching a team of six (6) with day-to-day and month-end accounting functions, including those related to the general ledger, accounts payable, and financial reporting.   
  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements and other key management reports, such as budget reports and weekly cash flow schedule
  • Perform analytical reviews of the income statement, including variance analysis.
  • Review and approve journal entries, bank transactions, and balance sheet account reconciliations.
  • Research and resolve complex accounting issues related to transactions originating from AAFMAA’s insurance administration system.
  • Manage the month-end close process to ensure financial information is recorded accurately and timely.
  • Assist in coordinating the annual financial statement audit.
  • Support the preparation of IRS Form 1099s and other annual regulatory filings.
  • Maintain accounting policies and procedures, monitor internal controls, and advocate for improvements to internal control processes based on accounting best practices.
  • Lead and implement cross-functional projects aimed at improving processes and procedures to reduce costs, realize efficiencies, and increase operational effectiveness.

QUALIFICATIONS | EDUCATION | EXPERIENCE:

 

  • BA/BS degree in Accounting
  • CPA (preferred)
  • 10 – 15 years of work experience in all aspects of accounting
  • Proven supervisory experience with strong leadership skills
  • Professional knowledge of full accounting cycle
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel
  • Strong communication skills and team-oriented
  • Exceptional analytical and problem solving abilities
  • Broad conceptual judgment, initiative, and ability to deal with complex accounting issues
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, a plus
  • Military service and/or insurance industry experience (preferred)
