Who we are looking for:

ASCO has a new and exciting role for a high-performing and experienced Assistant Controller to join our growing Finance Department.

Remote candidates welcome or primary location in Alexandria, VA.

What you will do:

  • Manage, coach, and develop team responsible for the general ledger and financial reporting
  • Assure primary responsibility for maintaining chart of accounts, allocation methodologies, consolidating entries, and financial statement mapping; and assist in the preparation of financial statements
  • Ensure compliance with accounting policies and with GAAP for reporting and recording transactions
  • Manage the month-end close through preparation of financial statements to assure timely reporting
  • Interface with external auditors and assist with preparations for audits
  • Review and assure follow-up on account reconciliation of balance sheet accounts and develop processes to capture and correct transactions that do not process properly in a timely fashion
  • Review the company’s accounting information to identify and resolve inaccuracies or imbalances
  • Assist in the generations of financial information for IRS Form 990 filings in compliance with official guidelines and requirements
  • Contribute to the implementation of new business processes including testing of new systems, validation of data transferred to the new systems, and other tasks related to transitioning to the new enterprise business solution, and become the general ledger super user for the new ERP
  • Assist with trouble shooting errors and developing internal controls to assure all transactions are properly recorded
  • Manage bank relationship for operating account issues

What you will need in order to be successful:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration
  • At least 8+ years of progressive accounting experience within a multi-entity organization
  • 5+ years of increasing responsibility for not-for-profit accounting and reporting
  • 3 - 4+ years of supervisory experience
  • Experience with enterprise resource system configuration and operations

Ideal candidates will also contribute: 

  • An active CPA
  • Experience implementing a new accounting module or ERP
  • Managing programs of high priority projects and project management initiatives related to key accounting activities

  • Ability to challenge, motivate, and coach team to meet departmental goals and build team capabilities in order to adapt to changes in the product offerings, systems, and accounting guidance
  • Ability to evaluate system functionality and adopt functionality to automate and enhance operational processes
  • Able to work collaboratively with diverse business leaders, communicate ASCO vision and strategy across all levels of the organization, and build consensus around key initiatives and projects
  • Comfortable with ambiguity; able to handle the unexpected with flexibility, ability to apply accounting guidance to specific ASCO situations
  • Experience leading complex change initiatives; demonstrated skills in change management
  • Highly effective verbal, non-verbal, and written communication methods for external and internal audiences
  • Management and organization skills to assure accuracy and timeliness of transaction capture as well as ability to meet deadlines
  • Possesses outstanding business acumen, analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Technologically savvy including proficiency in Excel to be able to develop queries to assist in reconciliations and identify issues
  • Strong customer service skills
