Job Description

Lead the provision of a full and effective management and project accounting service to an Operating Unit (OU) and/or Programme to ensure compliance with regulations and that the management accounting needs of Sellafield Ltd are met.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Manage the provision of the financial control service, developing, planning and controlling resources to ensure appropriate allocation of high standard work and effective work flow management.
  • Support development of cost control processes and systems to drive strategic and operational performance and to maintain compliance with standards and expectations.
  • Enforce and monitor internal controls to ensure accordance with UK and International accounting standards.
  • Ensure financial policies are being adhered to and provide guidance on the interpretation of financial policies and standards, in order to support the delivery of Sellafield’s strategy.
  • Provide independent assurance and challenge to immediate senior stakeholders, developing a trusted advisor relationship, to inform on the financial implications and consequences of business decisions, including impact on funding, efficiencies and fee.
  • Interrogate and analyse the cost base to enable well informed decisions on where and how money is best spent in the future, to maximise efficiency within funding and other constraints, within a specified directorate(s).
  • Provide practical financial support to ensure Change Control Board decisions are made with the benefit of current and appropriate funding information and robustly assessed work accelerations, to ensure accurate and effective decision making.
  • Manage the provision of agreed business management activities, for specific areas, to ensure effective day to day service delivery.
  • Line manage a team of financial professionals, setting and monitoring targets and ensuring that suitable development activity is in place.

Authorities & Dimensions

Authorities:
• Request for further project funding
• Conduct funds management, manual accruals, estimated service entries and efficiency fee claims
• Actions relating to non-compliance with Finance policies, procedures and legislation.

Dimensions:
• Control financial activity across directorate(s), typically £50m+ per annum.
• Manage a team of c.5 financial professionals
• Contractor claims in excess of £1m are not unusual.
• Business Case review of projects, which are often >£50m.

Role Context & Challenges

The primary focus of this role is to maintain good internal cost control, provide sound financial advice and communicate information that the business can easily interpret to promote good decision making.

The role holder must have knowledge of the operations, processes and structure of the OU or Programme and an appreciation of the issues and opportunities the area faces; providing the role holder with a greater understanding of how value is generated, how performance is improved and how efficiencies are enhanced.

The role is expected to have a balanced historical and forward looking view and be continually striving to provide better information for management evidence based decision making. There is a professional responsibility of the role holder to ensure that the OU or Programme is financially compliant with regard to reporting and control responsibilities which will aid the business in daily activities.

The role holder must be able to demonstrate the ability to advise and influence Directors and Operating Unit Heads on financial and business issues.

Essential Skills

• Chartered status (CIMA or other recognised body) or full membership of another professional accounting body.
• Experience in Financial Management
• Experience in leading, managing and motivating a team

  • Exceptional organisational skills to manage across a wide range of priorities and work to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships, and work in collaboration with people at all levels both internally and externally.

  • Continuous improvement mindset.
