The team

This summer placement is an exciting opportunity to gain a broad understanding of the finance function at Baillie Gifford. You’ll also sample most of the opportunities available on our Accountancy Graduate Training Programme.

Our Finance department of 65 people looks after Baillie Gifford’s corporate financial interests in the UK and across the globe. Responsible for all the firm’s financial reporting, the department prepares the partnership and statutory accounts, and handles regulatory capital management, tax fillings, payment management, payroll, expenses and more. We also provide full support on all finance matters including business development initiatives, as well as financial modelling.

On this internship you’ll undertake tasks in two main areas, Financial Control and Financial Reporting. The former is responsible for all the firm’s internal activity, such as expense analysis, preparing VAT returns and treasury management. Meanwhile, Financial Reporting deals with the firm’s external commitments, including statutory accounts and tax returns in both the UK and international jurisdictions. You’ll also have extensive overviews with our Investment Trusts, Client Administration and Fund Accounting departments that provide in-depth placements for our Accountancy Graduate Trainees.

The role

Starting on the 15th June, the Accountancy placement will be between 8 to 12 weeks. As part of a group of interns, you’ll receive tailored training and support, as well as a comprehensive induction and access to our learning and development courses. We’ll also provide you with a Learning Journal, to record your achievements and the skills you’ll gain throughout the experience.

This is an opportunity to understand the wide range of accountancy roles at Baillie Gifford. As well as working for four to six weeks with each of our Financial Control and Financial Reporting teams, we’ll provide overviews of our North American and European Fund Accounting teams that are responsible for the accurate pricing of our funds, Investment Trusts accounting services, and Client Administration, where client transactions are recorded, reconciled, and reported.

We’ll also give you the opportunity to take on real responsibility. In the Financial Control team, you'll be actively involved with the Expenditure & VAT team and get hands on with daily tasks such as administering employee expense claims and analysis of assigned ledger accounts. You'll also liaise with Inter-company and Treasury to give you an overview of how these teams work together. Within Financial Reporting, you’ll be part of the Accounting team and liaise with tax and regulatory specialists to assist with the review, submission and payment of international tax returns and the preparation of statutory accounts.

As you undertake these and other day-to-day tasks for the teams, you’ll gain an understanding of Baillie Gifford’s group corporate structure and unique reporting requirements, which cover different currencies and a variety of international regulations.

Requirements

Applications from all degree subjects are welcome for this placement, however you will need a Math’s Higher or equivalent. We’re looking for people who are self-sufficient, happy to ask questions and take responsibility for assigned tasks. If that sounds like you, and you’re enthusiastic and work well in a team, then we’d like to hear from you.

All placements begin on 15th June 2022.

At Baillie Gifford we are committed to fostering an inclusive and respectful culture in which each of our colleagues can thrive and develop. We believe that our clients are best served by a diverse workforce with the experiences, ideas and perspectives that this brings.
