Summary/Objective:

As a key member of the Executive Management team, the Controller/CFO will report to the President and assume a strategic role in the overall management of the company. The Controller/CFO will have primary day-to-day responsibility for planning, implementing, managing, and controlling the financial-related activities of the company. This will include direct responsibility for accounting, finance, forecasting, strategic planning, job costing, legal and risk management.

Essential Functions:

The following are the core responsibilities of the Controller/CFO that will occur on a daily, weekly and monthly basis and will involve in-depth interaction with members of the management and accounting teams. Special projects and other responsibilities not listed below will be assigned on an as needed basis with direction from the President.

Management
  • Provide leadership in the development for the continuous evaluation of short and long-term strategic financial objectives.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with management team members so as to identify their needs and seek full range of business solutions.
  • Perform risk management by analyzing the organization's business profile and control environment.
  • Direct and oversee all aspects of the Finance & Accounting functions of the organization.
  • Manage processes for financial forecasting, budgets and consolidation and reporting to the Company.
  • Manage cash balances and cash flow planning/forecasting to ensure funds availability.
  • Select and engage consultants, auditors, tax preparers, as needed.
  • Report significant issues to management and make recommendations for actions/solutions.
  • Manage special projects and other duties as required in accordance with company initiatives and changes.

Accounting Administration & Operations
  • Develop, maintain and ensure compliance with a documented system of accounting policies and procedures. Maintains and enhances an effective system of internal controls.
  • Oversee the accounting operations of the company including transaction processing activities.
  • Review all month-end closing activities including general ledger accounts, balance sheet accounts, overhead spending and project revenue and cost recognition.
  • Responsible for the recruitment, training, supervision, evaluation, and coaching of the accounting staff.

Financial Analysis, Budgeting & Forecasting
  • Review and analyze monthly financial statements and related reports issued in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) against budget for variances.
  • Coordinate the preparation of budgets and forecasts using a zero-based approach.
  • Manage project cost and margin reporting and analysis.
  • Prepare miscellaneous pro forma financial statements, analysis, and financial modeling as needed.

Annual
  • Coordinates and manages:
  • annual external financial review process
  • information for year-end financial statements and tax returns
  • annual professional and liability insurance renewal process
  • annual employee health insurance renewal process
  • monitoring and renewal of all business licenses and permits as required

Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or relevant study or equivalent required.
  • CPA or CMA preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of comparable experience or a combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Construction industry experience given preference.

  • Must have considerable business management experience with good knowledge of accounting principles and functions. Construction experience is strongly desired for this position.
  • Ability to work independently and complete duties and projects with little direct supervision.
  • Ability to accurately work under pressure in meeting deadlines.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills.
  • Must be proficient with Excel, Word and Google applications. Proficiency with QuickBooks or other web-based financial software also desired.

Work Environment:

This position operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopier/printer/scanner, filing cabinets. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Working overtime is anticipated as needed to complete all assigned duties in a responsible and timely manner.
