Under direct supervision, the Tax Specialist I prepares and processes company taxes in compliance with all applicable taxing jurisdictions and complies with applicable licensing requirements. Verifies and analyzes tax data for accuracy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares basic multi-state sales and use tax returns, environmental tire fee returns and other miscellaneous taxes using tax software systems.
  • Validates tax exempt certificates using tax exempt software system; works with both employees and retail customers.
  • Communicates and assists stores with tax exempt guidelines.
  • Assists in preparation, filing and paying business personal property tax returns.
  • Monitors business licenses and permits renewal dates; and takes appropriate action to keep all licenses and permits current; provide and ensures each location has current licenses and permits to be posted.
  • Research and resolves basic business license and permit issues to include penalties, non-compliance and false alarm notifications.
  • Prepares and maintains internal tax certificates including Form W9 and various resale certificates; updates and provides as needed.
  • Assist with IRS W-9 EIN Verification and 1099 processing.
  • Stays current on the latest industry technologies, trends and strategies.
  • Assists employees, vendors or other customers by answering basic questions related to tax procedures and services.
  • Completes work in a timely and accurate manner while providing exceptional customer service.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • This position requires a minimum of one year corporate tax or GL experience; knowledge of state tax law is highly preferred.
  • Tax experience in a retail environment is preferred.
  • Experience researching, compiling, analyzing and interpreting tax data preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret tax laws with guidance is necessary.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including skills with Word and Excel is required.
  • Ability to design and create basic spreadsheets is necessary.
  • SAP experience preferred.
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure, accurately meet deadlines and present a professional demeanor is essential.
  • Proven ability to work independently and in a team, multi-task, and manage multiple projects to meet various deadlines simultaneously is required.

Education Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED required; additional college level accounting or business related classes preferred

Work Days:

Normal work days are Monday through Friday; Occasional Saturdays and Sundays may be necessary

Work Hours:

Normal work hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Occasional overtime (more than forty hours per week) may be necessary
