Through collaboration and community, shared stories and shared experiences, NCTE supports teachers and their students in classrooms, on college campuses, and in online learning environments.

For more than 100 years, NCTE has worked with its members to offer journals, publications, and resources; to further the voices and expertise of educators as advocates for their students at the local and federal levels; and to share lesson ideas, research, and teaching strategies through its Annual Convention and other professional learning events.

The National Council of Teachers of English is devoted to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education. This mission statement was adopted in 1990: “The Council promotes the development of literacy, the use of language to construct personal and public worlds and to achieve full participation in society, through the learning and teaching of English and the related arts and sciences of language.”

 

The Opportunity

The Director of Finance will be responsible for directing accurate and timely accounting operations of NCTE, including collaborating with the CFO and staff on areas of financial impact and opportunity. Leading a team of accounting professionals, the Director will be responsible for the development of each team member while ensuring redundancy in operational support. Responsible for monthly reporting and the coordination of the annual audit, the Director will be expected to drive the finance department forward toward continued efficiency, greater impact, and further innovation within the accounting and finance area as well as the overall organization. 

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Accounting Processes

  • Lead accounting staff members in support of regular functions, including but not limited to account reconciliation, expense verification and approval, investment entries, and journal entries.
  • Perform biweekly payroll verification and approval.
  • Complete month-end closing consistent with an established schedule, communicating key dates to all staff each month.
  • Ensure timely distribution of accurate financial statements and dashboard reports.
  • Ensure effective internal controls are maintained by reviewing bills prior to payment and completing monthly reconciliations of bank and credit card accounts.
  • Oversee semiannual royalty payment process, informing the Publications team throughout.
  • Work with the CFO to coordinate annual budget development.
  • Lead budget managers in a review of financial performance against budget goals throughout the fiscal year, flagging areas of overspending or underperformance for action. 
  • Ensure effective cash management at annual conventions and conferences by utilizing procedures established by the CFO.
  • Prepare for and lead all activities with NCTE’s outside auditors during the annual audit, directing the gathering of documentation to ensure deadlines and requirements are met for a seamless outcome. 
  • Coordinate the preparation of the 990.
  • Complete lobbying reports and sales tax filings. 
  • Prepare or review periodic grant reports, including federal and state-funded programs, and collaborate with appropriate staff to ensure the timely usage of grant funding.
  • Ensure all accounting SOPs are updated and accessible to authorized staff.
  • Maintain accurate records of the organization’s assets.
  • Implement improvements to the internal control system in collaboration with the CFO, including those recommended by NCTE’s auditors. 
  • Provide input in the development of automated information systems within the accounting process. 

 

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Represent the Finance function during internal meetings across staff and with individual departments. 
  • Lead a team of two accounting staff members, ensuring regular communication, cross-training for redundancy, and provision of professional growth opportunities in accordance with NCTE’s path. 
  • Oversee distribution of finance staff assignments, monitoring accuracy and job performance to deliver timely and ongoing feedback.
  • Partner with the CFO and external accounting firm to ensure seamless and efficient oversight of NCTE’s accounting functions.
  • Collaborate with various departments on processes that have a financial impact, including but not limited to discounts/incentives, grants administration, scholarship funds distribution, awards payments, and annual PCI compliance certification. 
  • Train staff on procedures related to expense reports and coding/submitting bills and credit card reconciliation.

 

 ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS 

  • Drive continual improvement to ensure the finance department remains innovative in the use of technology and reporting options to facilitate decision making and the continued growth of NCTE. 
  • Foster relationships with staff to facilitate growth and development of new programs and services to support NCTE’s focus on innovation.
  • Work outside of traditional work hours to meet accounting deadlines may be required. To ensure balance, NCTE encourages use of its flextime policy.
  • Domestic travel for in-person events is required, estimated at two to four times annually. 

The Director of Finance will encompass the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, or related field
  • 8 to 10 years of experience in accounting roles and team leadership
  • Knowledge of the basic theories, principles, methods, and procedures of nonprofit accounting
  • Knowledge of automated data processing systems
  • Experience with public (federal or state) and private grant reporting preferred
  • Ability to prepare complete and accurate accounting reports
  • Ability to evaluate accounting problems and analyze and interpret accounting records
  • Self-reliance, good problem-solving skills, results-oriented mindset
  • Ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Proven ability to manage data and complexities within it
  • Superior organization skills and ability to work under deadlines
  • Proficiency with Microsoft suite (especially Excel and Teams)
  • Experience with Intacct and Aptify (or similar association management software) preferred
