About this job

The AVP and CarMax Auto Finance (CAF) Chief Financial Officer is the leading finance executive responsible for the division's financial planning and analysis, accounting controls and reporting, loss forecasting and vendor management functions. The role also has responsibility, in partnership with Corporate Treasury, to ensure capital is secured to support the division's origination strategy. The CAF division currently has over 1 million customers in its $14 billion portfolio and originates over $7 billion annually. The role will report directly to the Sr. Vice President and CFO of CarMax with an indirect reporting relationship to the Sr. Vice President and President of CAF.
  • Set the Vision and Strategy for the CAF Financial Teams, financial planning & analysis, budgeting, and forecasting for the CAF division, Financial Services and Products business and lead sales forecasting, from a credit perspective, for the CarMax organization.
  • Ensure the accuracy, compliance, and timeliness of the division's external reporting activity. Partner with the Financial Reporting Department in the Home Office to recommend/evaluate accounting policy for the division including the adoption of new rules. Coordinate the division's participation in the preparation and filing of the corporate annual and quarterly reports and any other SEC required filings.
  • Own CAF's loss forecasting process and accounting for the ALLL (Allowance for Loan and Lease Losses).
  • Ensure CAF originations are ‘self-funded' and capital is secured (currently $6 billion annually in bonds), in partnership with Corporate Treasury, to include financial strategy planning, investor interactions and bank or rating agency presentations.
  • Manage the division's relationship with CarMax external auditors; Present information/analysis to the Board of Directors as needed and provide support to CarMax Investor Relations on all CAF related items.
  • Lead the "Vendor Management" function for CAF.
  • Execute effective Talent Management strategies to ensure the team is resourced as needed, with the right level of Talent, who meet the role requirements and are skilled to meet organizational objectives.

Purpose of the role

The CFO is a CAF senior executive team member, responsible for setting strategy and monitoring execution of CarMax's financial products, including our captive finance company, third-party finance providers, and EPP (Extended Protection Plans) products. The role requires leadership skills necessary to establish and execute strategic vision for the financial functions and to play significant role in the growth of the division. A candidate for this role will act with the utmost of discretion in all correspondence/presentations within and outside of the CarMax organization. A candidate should be resourceful, strategic and possess excellent analytical abilities. Self-reliance and strong initiative and the ability to influence business decisions thru leveraging solid business acumen and judgment are a must for this role. In addition, a candidate will be able to effectively interact, communicate and engage with all levels of the organization, from non-exempt staff up thru the company CEO.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related finance field. Certified Public Accountant (CPA), MBA desirable.
  • A minimum of 12 years finance experience with emphasis on closing process, budgeting and forecasting, and analysis.
  • A minimum of 10 years management experience; experience in managing multi-layer teams a plus.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, sufficient to interpret and implement complex concepts and familiarity with capital markets as it relates to the finance business.
