Position Summary:

The Accounting Manager works closely with partners, executive leadership, supervisors, staff, and more to facilitate completing all accounting engagements. Reporting to the Director of Finance & Controller, the Accounting Manager - General Services position includes the oversight of the accounting department and accounting team members. As the Accounting Manager, you would address many accounting activities, including general ledger preparation, financial reporting, year-end audit preparation, and the support of budget and forecast activities. Your position will be solely responsible for the financial aspects of the APS Membership, Meetings, Development, including developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. This role also supports the annual budgeting process, oversees and leads the preparation process for tax and other compliance reporting. Our Accounting Manager will work out of our College Park, Maryland office and will work in a hybrid schedule to work both on-site weekly and remote as needed.

 

Responsibilities:

Overseas all financial aspects of APS’ Prizes & Awards, Board designated, and Endowment funds to ensure accuracy and compliance. Responsible for all financial aspects of the Membership, Meetings, and Development departments and serve as a stakeholder engagement manager with those respective departments Overseas the selection, implementation, and adoption of third party Accounts Payable automation tools Overseas continuous improvement of the automation of the accounts payable function Serve as system owner and manage all financial components of SalesForce NimbleAMS Serve as system owner and manage all financial components APS’ corporate credit card management system. Overseas and leads the monthly close schedule Supports the financial statement audit. Supports the Controller in the preparation and review of the consolidated financial statements including:

  • Document and maintain internal controls    Maintaining aspects of the general ledger system Providing monthly, quarterly and year-end analyses Researching accounting issues for compliance with GAAP Preparing and reviewing appropriate ledger entries and reconciliations.

Coordinating and assisting with the annual budget planning and preparation process, analyzing and reporting on interim cost variances and providing ad hoc analysis and modeling Leads the preparation process for tax and other compliance reporting including preparation of the Forms 990, 990-T, and other state and local tax and registration filings. Hiring, training and supervising accounting staff

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certification: CPA or CMA Certification desirable.

Experience: 5-7 years of progressive mid-sized non for profit accounting experience with management responsibilities required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to read and accurately interpret policies, procedures, regulations and guidelines and effectively communicate processes and procedures required of PI/Budget Officers in grant administration and management. Fundamental knowledge of GAAP Experience with AP Automation tools, Third Party Invoicing software and/or Concur a plus Excellent management skills and attention to detail is mandatory. Staff management skills in the form of training, assigning, monitoring, and communicating job expectations. Project management skills in the form of meeting finance calendar deadlines, completing actions plans, and implementing procedures to streamline an efficient departmental workflow. Previous experience as an Accounting Manager in a medium to large size, complex and dynamic Non-Profit setting preferred Excellent written and verbal communication skills Strong analytical skills Experience in Lawson/CloudSuite ERP system a plus Experience with SalesForce Revenue Cloud suite is a plus Ability to work well with interdepartmental teams as well as independently. Must be a self-starter and able to perform under general directions
