Responsibilities

The payroll director is a hands-on leadership role requiring a collaborative and agile leader with strong payroll knowledge including payroll processing, compliance, reporting, and auditing for all entities with a focus on establishing a centralized payroll function.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage the day-to-day payroll operations in all areas, coordinating with the enterprise payroll teams and providers to achieve the processing of payroll within all regulatory, labor and tax guidelines.
  • Oversee and approving payrolls, ensuring all processes are followed with accuracy.
  • Ensure consistent implementation, usage, controls, and maintenance of Workday Payroll software across the enterprise.
  • Effectively lead and grow a strong, motivated team with geographically dispersed staff working in various remote and onsite locations.
  • Ensure compliance with all aspects of payroll policies, guidelines, procedures, and regulations across the enterprise.
  • Develop payroll policies and best practices and contribute towards efforts to standardize payroll procedures and continuously improve services.
  • Create payroll reports, data files, and ad-hoc analyses needed to support employee compensation, workers compensation, budgeting requirements, and other requests.
  • Prepare and file quarterly/annual payroll tax forms (i.e. Form 941) and reconciliations
  • Manage auditing of expense reimbursements for the enterprise.
  • Manage external relationships with 3rd party vendors, quality assurance procedures to validate and reconcile payroll data, and communication to mitigate the risk of any payroll-related processing or filings performed off-site.
  • Audit W-4s, payroll balance sheets, YTD earnings, etc. to provide consistent practices throughout the organization.
  • Collaborate with business units to review cross-departmental impacts and reconcile data sharing.
  • Create training materials and provide training, coaching and assistance on l payroll processes with the payroll team
  • Supports and provides direction on Kronos, ADP and other payroll process system setup, maintenance, upgrades and enhancements.
  • Maintains and audits data in Kronos and HRIS/payroll systems to ensure employee information to accurate. Provides feedback to the administrative support team, ensuring data is accurate.
  • Creates and reports KPI (key performance indicator) payroll metrics for the enterprise.
  • Act as the lead point of contact for enterprise payroll related

Qualifications

To qualify, you must have a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a closely related field. 

  • A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in a payroll operation. 
  • A least four (4) years in a leadership/managerial role managing all aspects of payroll for a complex organization of 2,000 employees or more.
  • Experience with automated and union payroll
  • Experience with Workday Payroll is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Kronos timekeeping or similar timekeeping software.
  • Experience managing payroll system upgrades, time tracking.
  • Experience with multi-state taxation and the taxation of non-resident foreign national employees under tax treaties.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation is highly desired.
