Starting Salary Up to $38.17/hour ($79,665/year) plus a cash allowance of approximately $600/month*

As Business Property Auditor-Appraiser I, you will gain experience auditing accounting records based upon data contained in the accounting records and from physical inspections. Additionally, you will learn how to explain business assessment auditing procedures and methods to the general public, businesses, and commercial firms. You will also learn to apply auditing and appraisal theories and techniques to assess valuations of businesses' assets and improvements, as well as personal items like boats and aircrafts. Other responsibilities include:

  • Verifying the accuracy of property statement data submitted to the Assessor's Office
  • Assisting taxpayers with property statements and property tax matters
  • Verifying that property improvements are accurately assessed and classified by reviewing building records
  • Inspecting and comparing property statements to determine if all property is reported
  • Determining the proper classification of personal property or improvement
  • Preparing assessment appeal cases and testifying before the Assessment Appeals Board

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with internal and external customers
  • A detail-oriented, analytical mindset
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • The ability to research, plan, organize, and make timely decisions to meet project and task deadlines
  • Good decision-making abilities
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office software 

Please note: The California State Board of Equalization (BOE) is responsible for the certification of state and county assessors' personnel performing appraisals for property tax purposes. Statutes require the BOE to certify Auditor-Appraisers before they perform these duties. The certification includes an initial evaluation of the candidate's education and experience, and the successful completion of a qualifying examination.
