POSITION SUMMARY

The firm’s Director of Finance and Accounting manages, coordinates, and ensures the effective execution of all financial functions and activities of the law firm, its affiliated not-for-profit 501(c)(6) membership association, and its affiliated for-profit Subchapter S consulting company. Reporting to the firm’s partners, the incumbent plays a critical “hands on” role in preparing, reviewing, and presenting a wide variety of financial reports and analyses to internal and, in the case of the firm’s affiliated not-for-profit entity, external stakeholders, and helps ensure the integrity and functionality of all finance- and accounting-related systems and platforms.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversees cash flow planning and ensures availability of funds as needed
  • Oversees cash, investment, and asset management
  • Oversees financing strategies/activities and banking relationships
  • Develops and utilizes forward-looking, predictive models and activity-based financial analyses to provide insight into the organization’s operations and business plans
  • Ensures proper maintenance of all accounting systems and functions
  • Assesses existing operations for opportunities to automate processes, presents to firm leadership compelling ROI analyses to support proposed automation efforts, and oversees projects to successful implementation
  • Ensures maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures
  • Ensures timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting for all required filings, entity owners, and association’s board of directors
  • Oversees the preparation and communication of monthly and annual financial statements
  • Coordinates audits and proper filing of tax returns
  • Ensures legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Experience in a financial-management role, resulting in the development and implementation of effective financial management strategies
  • Significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including special project fund accounting, compliance, and reporting
  • Experience working with information technology staff to implement, upgrade, and manage finance and accounting software packages and business systems integrations
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree (MA/MBA preferred) in Business, Management, or Finance
  • Minimum of seven years of finance-related experience, CPA preferred but not required
  • Proven track record or demonstrated capacity to simultaneously manage multiple business lines’ financial systems
  • Legal, audit, compliance, budget, and resource development experience
