Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the Role
As a Pacific Fisheries Adviser you will have direct impact on economic and social outcomes and will have the unique opportunity to provide fisheries management support and capacity development to Pacific Island fisheries administrations. You will provide advice and learning opportunities that improves the on-going ability of Pacific Island countries to sustainably manage their fisheries resources. To achieve this you will assess needs, customise your approach and at times deliver online training content and deliver learning programmes onsite.
You will be part of a small team working on the management of fisheries for highly migratory species both domestically and internationally. While part of a wider team with supportive colleagues, this is a highly autonomous role where you will drive your own work programme. For the right person an opportunity to develop stakeholder engagement skills, elicit demand from agencies and make a significant contribution to the protection of a valued resource.
To deliver the core duties you will:

* Develop strategies and regulatory tools for long term sustainability of New Zealand's highly migratory fisheries
* Deliver the outcomes for the Ministry's programme of assistance to Pacific Island fisheries administrations
* Build and maintain relationships with Pacific Island fisheries administrations and key service providers for the Pacific
* Integrate outcomes, objectives, and management strategy across the Ministry's Pacific programme
* Develop and implement operational plans for delivering against Pacific capability outcomes
* Coordinate cost effective capacity development opportunities for Pacific Island fisheries administrations

Mōu - About You
You will be working with a diverse range of stakeholders including government officials, community and commercial fishing interests based in a variety of Pacific Island countries. Excellent communication skills are essential as are a combination of technical skills and cultural awareness.
This is a complex, challenging and rewarding role requiring a unique mix of skills. To be successful in this role you will need:

* Understanding of Pacific fisheries issues
* Strong project management skills
* Relevant experience as a policy analyst or in a similar working environment.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
* Resilience and adaptability
* Understanding of, and experience operating in, Government processes, including Parliamentary processes.
* A relevant tertiary qualification in economics, law, fisheries, or biological sciences, resource management.

Outside of the global pandemic there is considerable domestic and international travel required as part of the role although it is not expected currently.
