The Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC) exists to awaken a more loving world through the teaching and practice of the Christian contemplative tradition. Internally, we are creating a modern workplace with the professional skills needed to scale the work of the CAC to reach a larger audience.

As we grow, we are looking for an experienced Finance and Accounting Director to join our team and direct all accounting and finance activities to continue to mature the finance function at the CAC.

We are a small organization, but we have a complex financial model and are implementing a holistic financial philosophy based on our founder’s values. This role requires both the ability to understand and implement our unique strategy under the guidance of the Managing Director of Finance, and a willingness to support the finance team with detailed, hands-on work.

Your main focus will be to organize and coordinate the successful execution of financial reporting and analysis for both internal and external customers while establishing and enforcing proper accounting methods, policies and principles. You will be tasked with bringing finance and accounting projects together into a comprehensive whole to support the organization’s mission and will lead those projects to successful completion.

If you’re a professional leader who’s dedicated to the field of accounting and the development and implementation of systems for collecting, analyzing, verifying and reporting financial information, this role is right for you.

What You’ll Do

  • Oversee and manage the general accounting functions, including (but not limited to) accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll, fixed assets, royalty payments, and cash management.
  • Manage audits, 990 tax returns, sales tax, and compliance functions.
  • Lead the payroll function, maintaining appropriate systems and controls.
  • Direct the integrity of the accounting information by maintaining the organization's compliance with non-profit accounting principles, practices, procedures, and initiatives.
  • Support the development, approval and implementation of the annual budget and capital projects, maintaining related systems and models.
  • Develop recurring and ad hoc financial reporting and analysis.
  • Manage accounting systems and workflows, supporting the implementation of new software in partnership with the technology team.
  • Direct the development and implementation of internal control policies & procedures.
  • Manage a small accounting team, vendors, and outsourced support.

What We’re Looking For

  • You have proven experience managing the nonprofit accounting function and designing effective and successful finance processes.
  • You have demonstrated success building new processes and iterating upon old ones to create order and efficiency.
  • You’re a systems thinker with the ability to analyze problems and create customized solutions that align with our strategy and meet our size and budget constraints.
  • You’re flexible and willing to do the necessary behind the scenes work to enable us to carry out our mission.
  • You’re a natural leader who other team members can rely on for support and you’re open to influence from others.
  • You have a growth mindset and are excited at the opportunity to be both a contributor and learner in a complex organization with a unique financial philosophy.
  • You have experience applying (or are open to learning how to apply) a diversity, equity and inclusion lens to your work.
  • You enjoy tackling new challenges and demonstrate the ownership and resilience to drive projects through to completion.
  • Your interpersonal and communication skills enable you to build strong relationships and establish credibility with your team and leaders across the organization.
  • You have experience implementing new software and/or systems across an organization, leading training and managing change to ensure proper execution.
  • You are interested in contemplative spirituality and/or personal transformation and are excited to learn about and support CAC’s mission, content, and programs.

Qualifications

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA).
  • Minimum of three years experience managing an accounting function and team required.
  • Experience using and administering Sage Intacct accounting software or equivalent.
  • Proven leadership managing, guiding and leading a financial team.
  • Experience in a financial role in a non-profit organization.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
