Summary of Role:

The Center for Plain English Accounting (“CPEA”) is the Association’s national A&A resource center. The CPEA’s lead manager assists member firms in understanding and implementing accounting, auditing, review, compilation, and quality control standards by sharing technical advice and guidance. The CPEA’s lead manager accomplishes that in a straight-forward and clear style of writing and speaking. Secondarily, the CPEA lead manager serves as assistant staff liaison of the Private Companies Practice Section (PCPS) Technical Issues Committee (TIC) and supervises committee efforts in Zone 3 (governmental), as well as other assignments as assigned by the lead TIC liaison.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities:

Responsibilities related to CPEA (approx. 70-80% of role)


  • Serve as a subject matter expert on topics and issues impacting subscribers to the CPEA through providing effective and timely responses to CPEA members’ technical inquiries received via email. Research applicable U.S. GAAP and U.S. GAAS in developing high-quality answers.
  • Address CPEA technical director review comments on all inquiries each month and follow up with members, as necessary.
  • Help prepare slides and participate in CPEA webcasts, addressing the implementation of new standards and other relevant A&A topics.
  • Assist in preparing monthly reports on key accounting and attest topics, including new standards and guidance.
  • Promote the CPEA and its mission with internal and external stakeholders.  Serve as a representative for CPEA and support and advance membership and subscriber goals for the team through attendance and presentations at AICPA conferences (ENGAGE, EBP, NFP, etc.) and others as determined appropriate by the team.

Responsibilities as Assistant TIC liaison (approx. 20-30% of role)

  • Serve as the TIC Zone 3 (governmental) staff member
    • Assist in preparation of agenda with Zone Chair, organize meetings and take primary responsibility for initial drafting of comment letters in coordination with TIC members.
  • Assist with ensuring TIC comment letters are completed by assigned deadlines.
  • Attend TIC meetings/calls when schedule permits for Zone 1 (accounting and financial reporting) and Zone 2 (audit, attest, review, compilation).
  • Help ensure that all TIC members have an optimal volunteer experience.
  • Monitor and attend standards setting meetings including those of the GASB and other standards-setters as necessary.

Other Responsibilities


  • Stay abreast of developments in the accounting profession and for assigned area; monitor legislative, regulatory and industry landscape for news and developments impacting members and maintain and expand technical A&A knowledge and expertise by keeping current on accounting and attest standard setting activity, learning new standards and guidance, and completing continuing professional education courses.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on topics and issues impacting PCPS members and CPEA members and promote PCPS, TIC, and the CPEA with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist other teams within the Association as needed on subject matter knowledge and information. Contribute ideas for publications, webcasts and member learning and competency resources based on input received from TIC members.
  • Coordinate with staff of the PCPS Executive Committee on accounting matters and assist with presenting at their meetings as requested on technical issues.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Deep working knowledge of U.S. GAAP, audit, attest, compilation, review, and quality control standards

Required Experience, Qualifications & Education:

  • 5-7 years’ experience in public accounting (medium-large firm) or comparable experience, including experience with non-public entity clients (private companies).
  • Ability to perform research using a variety of resources covering both audit and attest topics.
  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
  • CPA license.

Preferred Experience, Qualifications & Education:

  • National office experience, or other similar experience in either creating and presenting content on accounting matters as well as significant experience researching accounting/assurance issues.
  • Experienced in writing about and presenting accounting and attest technical literature.
  • Helpful to have experience with governmental accounting or auditing standards, but not required.
