The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domesticnational security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.

The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia's customs service.The Australian Border Force's mission is to protect Australia's border and facilitate the legitimatemovement of people and goods across it.

Overview of the Branch and Section:

The branch is responsible for internal budget allocations (departmental/administered and capital), internal management reporting and analysis, providing strategic financial advice to stakeholders through the Group Finance Partner network, and delivering a strategic costing framework for the Portfolio.

About the role:

Group Finance Partners (GFPs) act as the strategic link between Finance Division and the Department. GFPs are responsible for leading small to medium sized teams providing financial support to discrete business areas in a business partnering arrangement.

This service includes providing strategic financial advice to business, assisting with establishing budgets and forecasts, and undertaking financial reporting to the Client Network. GFP teams also play a role in assisting projects with their financial management responsibilities. The nature of the GFP role is that it primarily reports through to the CFO and is expected to provide analysis and insight into business areas to inform whole of Department budget and reporting strategies.

  • Specific duties/responsibilities:
  • Provide high level strategic financial advice through regular reporting to and engagement with the Client Network
  • Assist business areas to establish budgets and provide accurate forecasts in a self-service budget management system
  • Oversee staff undertaking financial processes and reporting, including month end accruals, correction journals, reconciliation journals, financial analysis and monthly reporting activities
  • Prepare complex and/or sensitive correspondence, submissions and briefs, answers to parliamentary questions and Freedom of Information requests, notes on cabinet submissions and advice for the Minister and the Secretary
  • Leading the Section by providing mentoring and supervision of staff.

  • Role requirements/qualifications:

    The following knowledge and experience is highly desirable:
  • Experience in a similar role would be an advantage
  • Excellent technical knowledge system experience with SAP, TM1 or similar systems will be highly regarded
  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills
  • High level oral and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to exercise sound judgement, supported by demonstrated business and commercial acumen
  • Sound leadership, influencing and communication skills together with an ability to manage and develop staff.
