The Bureau of Meteorology is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Financial Accountant to join the Corporate Finance team in Melbourne. As a Financial Accountant, you will provide support to the Finance Manager in leading the Corporate Finance team and will be liaising with a wide range of stakeholders, both internal and external to the Bureau.

Supporting the office of the Chief Financial Officer, there are additional requirements that this role will has sound knowledge of the Australian Public Service is required. This includes regular reporting to Department of Finance, adherence to regulations and legislation mandated to government agencies such as the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act and addressing adhoc queries arising on request from Parliament.

This position encompasses financial reporting, compliance with relevant legislation and accounting standards and external audit management. You will be involved in the coordination and delivery of these services along with any process improvements identified in a timely, efficient and accurate manner.

The key duties of the position include:

  • Prepare monthly and annual financial statements, briefing papers, reports and recommendations for internal and external stakeholders, providing accounting services where appropriate.
  • Manage month-end, hard-close and year-end including journals.
  • Conduct, review and improve the reconciliation of balance sheets, appropriate accounts and sub-ledgers, and investigation of any anomalies.
  • Provide authoritative advice on, and assist with, various financial management activities including cash flow forecasting and reporting, assets and capital investment programs reporting, FBT, GST and WHT reporting in accordance with accounting standards, legislation and internal policies.
  • External audit management, liaison with auditors and other stakeholders, prepare reports and papers for Audit Committees to support financial compliance and audit requirements.
  • Provide specialised financial, tax and resource management and analytical advice, support and guidance to all stakeholders ensuring compliance with relevant government legislation and directives, accounting standards, and policies and procedures.
  • Ensure day to day compliance with all statutory and regulatory obligations.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous process improvement.
  • Provide technical project delivery and support in other finance related tasks to the team as required.
  • Lead the delivery of responsible tasks and provide support to the Finance Manager for other Finance related services.
  • Facilitate the establishment of an internal financial compliance audit function to support the framework, providing regular reporting to stakeholders, identifying gaps and opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Provide reliable, accurate and timely advice and expert opinion on financial analysis, compliance related matters and recommendations.
  • Liaise with other Groups and Programs within the organisation, external agencies and external stakeholders and facilitate cross-agency or multi-agency planning of program delivery.
  • Complying with all Bureau work, health and safety policies and procedures, taking reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of employees, contractors and visitors who may be affected by your conduct.
  • Support the team in the identification and introduction of new systems and tools, seeking opportunities for improvement to existing systems and processes, removing red tape where possible.


  • Eligibility

    Mandatory qualifications: A degree or diploma of an Australian educational institution, or a comparable overseas qualification, which is appropriate to the duties, OR other comparable qualifications, which are appropriate to the duties.
    Desirable skills/requirements: Certified Public Accountant or Chartered Accountant certification, SAP, Microsoft Office Suite, (Project, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Word, Excel and Outlook)
