What is the Role?

We are looking for a candidate for an exciting opportunity to join our Energy Economics Team as a Senior Analyst for International Markets. The role holder will play a critical part in developing and continually enhancing the service we provide to SSER on international power markets.

The successful candidate will be responsible for producing research into relevant power markets in Europe and North America, providing novel analysis, market reports and price outlooks, including the provision of long-term wholesale power prices, asset capture prices and other asset revenues for relevant markets. You will communicate these insights through a combination of discussions, reports and presentations. You will take responsibility for collecting and managing data on target markets, as well as researching and interpreting Government policy, market design and renewable support mechanisms. Over time the successful candidate will support the development and implementation of a market modelling strategy, as well as resolve associated questions relating to market arrangements, industry developments and regulatory change.

A key focus in this role will be both external and internal stakeholder engagement, providing a great opportunity for the candidate to benefit from the wealth of experience in Energy Economics and the wider business. You will partner with the SSER Business units, including Senior Management, to ensure that the service being provided by Energy Economics meets their needs, and will engage regularly with external market advisors, reviewing and critiquing their outlooks to provide insights to SSER. The successful candidate will work in a dynamic, intellectually stimulating, and demanding yet supportive environment. They will enjoy autonomy and opportunities to substantially influence major decisions in the business.

What do I need?

Ideally the successful candidate will have a broad knowledge of the energy sector, specific power market knowledge would be advantageous. You should be able to demonstrate good business acumen and be able to focus on the commercial implications of insights obtained through research. Prior experience in forecasting, energy consulting, commodity trading or related experience is highly valued.

Essential Functional / Technical Skills

- Educated to degree level in a relevant subject (economics, scientific or engineering)

- Economic/regulatory analysis and commercial problem-solving skills required

- Data-handling skills - the role involves managing large volumes of data for analysis; strong Excel skills are desirable, experience in specialist tools appreciated.

- Research techniques & skills - experience producing analysis/modelling for the power sector or comparable market desirable

- Clear communicator who can distil complex analysis into simple key messages for a range of audiences (both internal and external)

- Excellent attention to detail

- Adaptable and diligent team player

- Strong sense of curiosity and keen interest in problem solving - willing to take the initiative and ownership of the delivery of work

- Creative approach to problem solving, comfortable with interpreting and understanding complex, and sometimes ambiguous information and turning this into commercially viable insights for the business
