The Controller oversees the accounting operations of the University. The position also oversees the financial statement reporting and the ongoing implementation and monitoring of internal controls for the University. The position requires years of proven experience in various levels of accounting or financial statement auditing. The Controller manages a team of accountants and financial analysts on both of the University’s campuses. The position reports to the Chief Financial Officer.  This position may be located on the Downers Grove, IL or Glendale, AZ campus.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Planning, directing and coordinating all accounting operational functions
  • Managing the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of consolidated financial results
  • Coordinating and preparing internal and external financial statements
  • Coordinating activities of external auditors including overseeing the annual financial statement audit and Uniform Guidance audit
  • Providing management with information vital to the decision-making process
  • Assessing current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement and implementing new processes
  • Evaluating and monitoring internal control systems
  • Assessing the need for improvement in internal controls
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of accounting software and supporting databases
  • Keeping the University in compliance with emerging accounting guidance
  • Researching accounting guidance and determining proper accounting/reporting for complex transactions
  • Overseeing regulatory reporting, including tax exempt debt compliance and IRS form-990 reporting
  • Presenting monthly and quarterly financial results to various members of management
  • Managing, hiring, training and retaining skilled accounting staff
  • Oversight of Accounts Payable department and employee expense reimbursement process
  • Oversight of accounting and reporting for the University’s various health clinics
  • 25-40% travel to Downers Grove, IL campus will be required 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Strong understanding of financial statement reporting
  • Strong understanding on internal controls
  • Experience with not-for-profit health care organizations preferred
  • Experience with Uniform Guidance audits preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and management about the finances of the University and justify certain financial recommendations
  • Organization and project management
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  • Performance management

Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements:

  • CPA license
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting
  • Minimum 8-12 years’ experience in public accounting
