About the team

The finance team's mission is to protect and serve Canva and its key stakeholders; that is protecting Canva from external pressures and risks whilst balancing the need to best serve our teams.

About the candidate

As Canva continues on this exciting period of growth and traverses the ever increasing complexity of the international tax landscape, there is now a need to grow the tax function to include a global indirect tax manager. You'll have broad experience with US sales and use tax, GST (including Australian GST), VAT and digital service taxes with strong attention to detail and an aptitude for project management and using systems & technology.

You'll work closely with the global tax team, other members of the finance team, the broader business and our service providers to ensure that the Group's global indirect tax obligations are met.

We're a fast moving business so change is frequent, you'll be comfortable working in a hands on, dynamic environment and have excellent communication & negotiation skills.

Reporting to the Head of Tax, the core responsibilities of the role include:
  • Executing and optimising Canva's global sales tax strategy and providing expertise to the global finance team around indirect tax management
  • Ensuring global indirect tax compliance (GST, VAT, US sales & use tax, digital services tax and others as identified) is accurate and timely lodged and audit ready
  • Delivering global accounting and reporting of indirect taxes for financial statement purposes, including supporting any provision balances
  • Providing indirect tax review and recommendations for material contracts and support standardisation of global indirect tax clauses
  • Operating as a valued business advisor to key business segments (e.g.Billings & Payments team, Revenue accounting team)
  • Developing and providing training for the global tax team in relation to both indirect tax compliance best practices and indirect tax controversy prevention and managementSales tax provisioning
  • Ensuring appropriate controls and processes exist to facilitate the successful completion and timely lodgement of compliance within your accountability
  • Working closely with Canva's external tax service providers on tax related workstreams
  • Championing the implementation and use of technology within the tax function that can scale and grow with Canva and reduce the amount of administrative work for the team
  • Providing ad-hoc tax advice, with a focus on global indirect tax, to the Head of Tax, CFO and Directors around key strategic initiatives and growth into new markets.

  • The ideal candidate will have keen eye for detail, a strong desire to keep learning and you enjoy upholding high standards of excellence and integrity in the services you deliver. Operating in a fast paced environment you are able to adapt quickly, manage workloads and meet deadlines with support and oversight. You have excellent communication skills and approach tasks with a problem solving attitude, with a constant lens of continuous improvement. We would also love it if you had:
  • 6-8+ years of relevant experience
  • Strong business acumen with problem-solving creativity and commercial judgement
  • Degree level qualification in a relevant field;CA/CPA qualified or equivalent qualification
  • Highly organised with the ability to work under pressure and within set deadlines
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Self motivated with a desire to learn
  • Experience working in the tech sector or an equally fast growing, ever-changing environment
