Assistant Vice Chancellor and Controller

The University of California, Irvine (UCI) seeks an experienced, strategic Assistant Vice Chancellor and Controller (AVC/Controller). Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer/Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, the AVC/Controller is the University’s chief accounting and reporting officer with oversight of the University’s controllership functions. With a portfolio that includes oversight of campus revenues and expenditures totaling $2.4B annually, and leadership over approximately 100 career and contract appointed staff, the AVC/Controller is a key member of the University’s financial leadership team.

Founded in the 1960’s, UCI has grown to be a premier institution within the ten-campus University of California (UC) System and is the youngest member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU). The campus has produced three Nobel laureates and is known for its academic achievement, premier research, innovation, and anteater mascot. UCI has more than 36,000 students, offers 222 degree programs, and is Orange County’s second-largest employer, contributing $5B annually to the local economy. Throughout its first 55 years, UCI has enjoyed both rapid growth in enrollment and an equally impressive increase in the size, quality, and influence of its research programs, performing arts, and professional schools.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience leading accounting and reporting activities in an environment of similar size and complexity to UCI, with a strong preference for individuals who have worked in higher education, healthcare organizations, or institutions of similar size and complexity. Along with the ability to operate decisively in a fast-paced, customer service-focused atmosphere, the AVC/Controller will be an expert in implementing and improving internal control functions and in creating campus-wide policies and reports. The AVC/Controller will work closely with the UCI Medical Center controller and the University of California, Office of the President (UCOP) to ensure UCI consolidates its finances accurately and efficiently.
