South Wales Police Intern Programme

South Wales Police is excited to launch our 2021 Intern Programme; we are looking for people with diverse skills and experiences to join our successful team. This is an excellent opportunity for applicants who are looking for a 12 month work placement to join a specialist department and gain work experience and training.

In joining #TeamSWP you will be joining a leading force and one where you will be able to contribute new ideas and work to make a difference in society.

South Wales Police particularly welcomes applicants from under-represented groups.

Finance Intern

Are you looking to develop your finance skills within the public sector? Why not develop them at South Wales Police where you will be able to work on established finance systems alongside experienced colleagues to help you gain those crucial work-related skills and experiences.

The Corporate Finance Department is responsible for monitoring an annual budget of £328M million. It has a wide range of roles across four teams: management accounts, financial accounts, collaboration and exchequer/payroll. We provide advice and support to the Chief Constable and the Police & Crime Commissioner in preparing the annual budget, monitoring in-year expenditure, and reporting on the financial position regularly throughout the year. We also ensure more than 5,500 officers and staff are paid their salary and expenses on time each month; invest and control significant cash balances; scrutinise expenditure on significant capital projects, and support collaboration with other forces and organisations across Wales. Our overall aim is to ensure the Force is spending public money wisely to protect policing in our communities.

By becoming an intern within our Corporate Finance Department at South Wales Police Force, you will be looking at:

  • Helping to provide financial support and advice to other departments within the Force in support of Operational Policing;
  • Working with colleagues within the Force and in other forces in Wales to monitor and report on expenditure on collaboration activities to senior officers and partners;
  • Scrutinising expenditure to ensure the correct amounts are spent on the right things, and in the right way using internal systems and processes;
  • Working with finance department colleagues to continuously improve and develop our financial systems so they remain efficient and effective;
  • Ensuring we pay the correct amounts, on time, to our officers and staff, and also our creditors, as well as ensuring we collect the money owed to us; and
  • Ensuring compliance with national and international accounting standards, and internal financial regulations and processes.

The programme commences in September 2021. In order to be eligible for the intern programme you will need to be studying for a degree and looking for a ‘sandwich placement’ or alternatively you will have graduated within 3 years. Please note that all applicants will have to complete pre-employment checks.
