Position Summary:
The Finance team is looking for a skilled Tax Accountant and Budget Specialist to join their team. Reporting to the VP of Taxation, Financial Compliance, and Expense Management, the Tax Accountant and Budget Specialist will be responsible for preparing tax returns for NAR staff, affiliates, and subsidiaries, processing and reporting independent expenditures, and assisting the budgeting team during the Association’s budgeting process. The ideal candidate is collaborative, has experience in taxation and budgeting, a multi-tasker, comfortable with taking directives from various team leaders, and detail-oriented.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Apply and adhere to state and deferral tax laws during tax preparation process
- Oversee and execute the tax preparation process including preparing worksheets for tax returns, gathering the appropriate information for tax filing, making tax payments, applying credits, and ensuring that refunds are received
- Collaborate with Senior Tax and Reporting Analyst to process state and local Independent Expenditures (IEs) wires. This procedure includes processing IE payments, researching state and local political reporting obligations for start IEs, preparing and filing state compliance reports, completing bank and other reconciliations for financial and compliance reporting, and completing the IRS Form 8872 to report contributions the NAR Fund and state-independent expenditures
- Record IE payment on tracker worksheet and record journal entries
- Work with finance team members during budgeting process to ensure that program managers entered budget projections into the budget system correctly while adhering to association guidelines. Use the five-year projection report to identify variances in budget reports
- Compile and review budget system reports to ensure the program manager’s projections were recorded accurately. Format, edit and finalize lead documents for budget presentation
- Troubleshoot budgeting system
- Make recommendations on how to enhance processes and procedures for efficiency
- Other duties, as assigned
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, CPA preferred
- Strong accounting background with experience in taxation, budgeting and reconciliation
- Working knowledge of non-profit and for-profit state and federal tax requirements and forms
- Results-oriented with high attention to detail, ability to multi-task, and meet deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment
- Ability to think in innovative ways to find solutions to problem
- High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office—Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint
- Exceptional communication skills—verbal, written, and presentation
- Strong customer relations and interpersonal skills with a high level of response to all inquiries
