About us

The RAF Association is one of the leading providers of welfare assistance to the RAF community and we exist to ensure that their sacrifice does not result in suffering, poverty, loneliness or isolation. Last year, we supported over 85,500 members of the RAF community who required practical, emotional or financial assistance. We are there for those in need, during their darkest days, to help create a resilient, empowered and thriving RAF community.

About you

The Chief Finance Officer is responsible for the efficient management and processing of the organisation's financial transactions and for the accurate and timely reporting of all financial affairs across a group of companies, which includes the RAF Association, RAFATRAD, RAFA Kidz, RAFA Housing and RAFA Clubs.

This is an exciting time to join us. Along with other Charities, we have felt the challenge presented by Covid-19. However, we have a committed SMT and Trustee Board who have enabled us to reshape our organisation to position us well for the future. We are looking for a confident and values driven leader, who can complement our existing SMT and lead our financial strategy with a particular focus on cash management and financial risk, balanced with supporting SMT to deliver the key strategic themes, including continued strengthening of our welfare provision and the ability to generate continued fundraising commitment. Our 2019 results were positive, with an income of £16.2m, expenditure of £17.2M, and reserves of £35.7m.

You will hold a professional accounting qualification and have a proven track record of broad business and commercial acumen at a senior management level. Experience in running a finance team is essential, as are full IT skills. You will have evidence of being an experienced leader and manager with the ability to present and report in a coherent succinct style to a range of audiences.

About the role

The Chief Finance Officer will report to and advise senior management, trustees and various committees on all financial matters and will lead on the strategic financial development of the charity. The post holder will be responsible for all of the Association's assets including investments. The role is busy and varied and other responsibilities include

  • Prepare and manage financial budgets at a departmental and organisational level and manage the day to day financial administration of the Association, including financial reporting and cash flow and ensure that the Association has adequate banking facilities

  • Work closely with the external auditors on both the year-end assurance work and on-going issues in which they may be involved.

  • Manage the internal audit function.

  • Manage all the charity's tax affairs, including VAT and to seek professional advice on these matters where appropriate.

  • Review and manage any investments made by the charity and to advise on these investments and future investment policy

  • Contribute to the development of the Association's financial and operational strategy.

  • Convert strategic vision into financial and budgetary objectives

  • Working with trustees, auditors, legal advisers and staff colleagues to deliver statutory requirements and to develop understanding of Charity Commission requirements and legal responsibilities

  • Compile financial forecasts for integration within the charity's business plan.

  • Prepare and maintain the Association's Medium-Term Financial Plan, reporting to Trustees on the overall shape and direction of the Group's finances.

  • Lead on financial elements of the business plan at a strategic level.

This is a key role within the charity. The CFO will be highly visible and will have the opportunity to make an extremely positive impact on the RAF Association. Thus suitable candidates will not only have sophisticated commercial acumen, they will also have a demonstrable track record of working in a high growth, fast paced, dynamic organisation. The ideal candidate will "think outside of the box" and will be comfortable with both a "hands on" approach as well as a "strategic" mindset. This is a progressive environment that values a proactive approach to problem solving and continuous improvement and should appeal to candidates whose values are aligned with the core mission of the RAF Association.
