Experienced Financial Leader For Nationally Recognized College

Iḷisaġvik College in the city of Utqiaġvik, Alaska seeks an experienced and collaborative leader to serve as its next Chief Financial Officer. The CFO serves as a key advisor to the President and also sits on the Board of the Iḷisaġvik Foundation. The CFO is responsible for developing a financial strategy and implementing plans to achieve success through operational efficiencies, continuous improvement and implementation of best practices, consistent with Iḷisaġvik’s mission and culture.

With an annual budget of approximately $20 million, the CFO manages a staff of seven, supervising all cash and grant management activities while providing strategic level financial oversight and leadership. The preferred candidate will inherit an experienced team of financial specialists who have achieved seven consecutive years of clean audits with zero findings, deficiencies or adjustments.

The ideal candidate will be an approachable, collegial and collaborative leader with a demonstrated track record of supervisory experience, financial acumen and vision.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee the finances and ensure fiscal responsibility and security.
  • Play a leadership role in development and implementation of Iḷisaġvik’s strategic financial plan.
  • Assist in planning and implementation of annual operating budgets.
  • Ensure financial compliance with Iḷisaġvik’s policies and procedures as well as state, federal and local laws regulations and ordinances.
  • Consistently apply internal controls and procedures to ensure fiscal compliance with laws, rules and generally accepted accounting practices.
  • Oversee the accurate processing of payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
  • Present financial statements to Iḷisaġvik’s Board of Trustees and local community and government entities.
  • Assist in developing and reviewing state, federal and foundation grant proposals.
  • Develop and manage Business Office and Grants Office budget and staff, providing resources, knowledge and training while facilitating exceptional and collaborative service for students and other College departments.
  • Promote competency, quality, and the highest ethical standards throughout the organization.

The ideal candidate has experience in the nonprofit sector and demonstrates a commitment to high professional ethical standards and brings a variety of experiences and attributes to the organization, including: positive internal and external relationships, effective communication and diplomacy, financial and business acumen, and an appreciation for and cultural fit with a diverse Alaskan community. 

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or a similar field. Master of Business Administration (MBA) or other advanced degree, Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) a plus.
  • Minimum of seven years demonstrated experience in professional accounting, budgeting, financial analysis, advanced Microsoft Excel functions and computerized accounting systems.
  • Minimum of five years demonstrated professional supervisory experience and skill in coaching and professional development.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB), Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS) in a non-profit environment, and commitment to ongoing training. 
  • A strong financial understanding and management of multiple and interrelated budgets and programs with experience in oversight of a comparably sized budget.
  • A team-building, empowering leadership style with a proven track record of building and maintaining strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent management skills, open to direction and a collaborative work style.
  • A professional and approachable style, possessing a spirit of warmth, humility, and emotional intelligence.

Salary range: $132,000 to $150,000 annually DOE.   Iḷisaġvik College offers competitive benefits, including 36 days of paid leave, and use of departmental vehicle.
