Finance Director - 9 months FTC

The Finance Director provides exceptional leadership for the Finance department, ensuring a high level of service to stakeholders. The role ensures the highest standards of probity and financial integrity, strong governance and the application of good financial practice and robust controls. They are responsible for high quality external financial reporting, including to the Office for Students and other regulatory bodies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Foster a leadership culture across finance and the University more widely that is focused on delivery, performance and accountability.
  • Develop and implement the financial strategy to enable the implementation of the University 2020-25 Strategy and the ongoing financial sustainability of the University
  • Work with members of VCEG and senior leaders across the University to ensure that resources in relation to the delivery of the strategy are allocated in a manner which maximises impact.
  • As a member of VCEG and part of the wider leadership group, contribute to the delivery of the 2020-25 strategy, and have collective responsibility to help promote the Universities values and behaviors at all levels of the Institution.
  • Work closely with VCEG and other senior leaders to ensure that the University as a whole has a clear picture of its financial position and prospects and takes appropriate action to ensure its continued prosperity.
  • Advise VCEG and the Board of Trustees (and other relevant Committees) on appropriate financial planning and performance matters.
  • Advise Audit and Risk Assurance Committee on appropriate financial governance matters and be responsible for external audit.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with Member Institutions.
  • Lead the Finance department, ensuring that the best staff are attracted, developed, motivated and retained, and create an environment in which colleagues can reach their potential.
  • Provide leadership focus on managing cash and borrowings, dealing with lenders as well as forecasting the liquidity and cash flow needs of the organisation.
  • Lead, develop and ensure effective ownership of the University's financial planning, operational finance and budget setting.
  • Oversee significant capital investment projects to ensure they operate within budget and that effective processes are in place to approve and monitor such schemes.
  • Promote a culture of innovation, income generation and continuous improvement, with a focus on customer service and striving for value for money in all that we do.
  • Work closely with other senior leaders to ensure that the University's financial systems and reporting mechanisms, including statutory reporting requirements, are robust and effective.
  • Ensure that treasury management functions, banking relations and compliance are conducted efficiently and effectively, including the University's externally managed investment and endowment portfolio.
  • Ensure robust financial regulations and scheme of delegation.
  • Act as the University's key relationship interface with a number of external organisations, including external auditors, bankers and financial institutions.
  • Maintain an understanding of current affairs in the Higher Education sector, the pressures and challenges faced by the sector and how they impact on the strategy, policy and practice of the University. Where appropriate, represent the University at HE sector fora and networks.
  • Ensure the highest standard of professional practice as an individual and within the team. Maintain an awareness of and comply with all universities policies and procedures relevant to the role and as a University employee
  • To actively follow and promote the University policies, including the University's Dignity at Work and Equal Opportunities Policy and actively promote these wherever possible.
  • To maintain an awareness and observation of fire and health and safety regulations
  • Any other duties, consistent with the grade and scope of the post


Essential:

  • Experience in senior leadership in finance in a complex, dynamic organisation.
  • Substantial experience of strategic financial management
  • Previous experience as a Finance Director or in a senior level finance post
  • Experience of driving and improving financial performance
  • The ability to influence, persuade and positively overcome leadership challenges.
  • Commercial leadership and judgement at board level
  • Financial and commercial acumen, including performance improvement, restructuring, cost improvement
  • Excellent communication skills up to board level
  • Experience of managing change
  • The ability to lead a high performing team
  • Insight and integrity to provide organisational-level financial management leadership and advice
