Financial Controller

Robert Half are delighted to be working with an entrepreneurial fast growth SME business in the South West to build a new finance team starting with a high calibre Financial Controller. The succesful canidate will be comfortable working in an entrepreneurial owner-managed business environment, where at times things will be very hands on and you may be asked to get involved in supporting beyond your core finance remit.

The succesful candidate will also have experience of implementing and overseeing robust financial controls, processes, financial reporting, budgeting and cashflow forecasting and will not be phased by the prospect of having to create some of this from a standing start.

You will be proactive, approachable and capable of forming working relationships with key non-financial stakeholders throughout the business.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Day to day control of the Group finance function including line management of core finance team
  • Overseeing the production of monthly Management Information and providing supporting narrative and analysis for the Directors on a timely basis
  • Implementing adequate processes and controls across the group companies and ensuring these are regularly monitored and adapted where necessary
  • Ensuring accounts payable and receivable functions are operating effectively
  • Managing the statutory accounts process for all group companies, including coordinating financial audits (where necessary) and corporation tax filings
  • Overseeing monthly payroll and expenses process
  • Maintaining a rolling 13-week cashflow forecast to support effective decision making
  • Assisting the Finance Director with:
    • Preparation of annual budgets, ongoing monitoring and challenging variances
    • Longer term cashflow forecasting and business planning
    • Managing information requirements for external funders
    • Appraisal of proposed future development projects
    • Other ad hoc analysis as required
  • Working with Project Managers on their budgets and forecasts on a regular basis
  • Working with Operational and Commercial staff on negotiating sufficient credit terms with key businesses across the supply chain
  • Interpreting and communicating financial data to non-financial managers

Essential Skills

  • Qualified Accountant with previous experience in a Financial Controller role
  • Self-starter that is comfortable working autonomously in a fast-moving environment
  • Competent at forecasting short term cashflow requirements
  • Possesses the ability to challenge and support staff at all levels
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience of the financial audit process

Desirable Skills

  • Previous involvement in new systems implementation projects
  • Experience of finance function transformation projects / scale up
  • Exposure to raising 3rd party finance

Salary £55,000-£65,000
