Our client is a family owned business, generating revenues of around £200m, with a market leading position in its specialist field. Employing around 300 people across several continents, the group has enjoyed considerable success over the past decade and is well poised to continue this trend following key strategic decisions that have been taken over the last few years.



There now exists an exceptional opportunity to join the company as Group Financial Controller, working closely with the Group Finance Director and the owner directors to provide effective financial control throughout the company.



Responsibilities as follows:




  • Monitoring and control of all books of the company

  • Analysing and helping to correct any system or other accounting errors

  • Monthly company accounts

  • Assisting with preparation of group management accounts

  • Reporting to the company's bankers on a monthly basis as per relevant covenants, answering queries as they arise (in conjunction with FD/Management)

  • Production of quarterly group consolidation for the banks

  • Control of the annual audit process:

    • Preparation of the company and group consolidation accounts and all statutory reports

    • Production of all audit schedules, with assistance from internal teams

    • Liaise with the auditors and their tax team to answer questions and resolve issues, keeping the FD up to date during the process



  • Monthly payroll, providing information and liaising with the bureau on questions and year end reporting

  • Production and submission of annual PSA as agreed with HMRC

  • Monthly VAT returns and Intrastat:

    • Preparation and review of all schedules for external agencies reporting overseas

    • Working with relevant agents to resolve overseas VAT audit, and local tax authority questions

    • UK Submissions in compliance with MTD regulations

    • Responding to HMRC VAT audits and queries

    • Liaising with the IT department on any system requirements for VAT legislation changes

    • Setting up new and de-registering unrequired VAT numbers as needed



  • Daily point of contact for Logistics team

    • Confirmation of VAT treatments

    • Advising on processes for collections, deliveries, returns and corrections

    • Monitoring compliance with the above



  • Office for National Statistics returns

  • Working with IT team on development/improvement of systems

  • Review of overseas entity accounting entries, liaising with local fiscal agent as required

  • Authorised banking signatory for payments

  • Annual leave cover for the Treasury function

    • Preparation of supplier payment runs

    • Maintenance of foreign currency position



  • Communicate with overseas subsidiary companies as necessary

  • Other ad hoc issues as they arise



Qualifications/skills required:



The successful candidate should be either qualified or qualified by experience, with strong understanding and practical ability around all aspects of financial control for a group of companies. The ideal candidate will look at this as a long-term career opportunity.




  • Experience in providing financial control expertise in a similar sized organisation

  • Practical experience of preparing monthly management accounts for a group of companies

  • Annual statutory accounts preparation

  • Proven experience of European VAT returns and Intrastat

  • Understanding of import and export processes

  • Ability to liaise and communicate effectively

  • Hands on attitude and willingness to "roll up sleeves" if necessary

  • Very small team so this role is a "worker" role not a "supervisory" role

  • Ability to cope with bespoke situations without pre-set rules or guidelines

  • Ability to think through implications of system improvements
