Background to the role


The PUBLIC Financial Controller is responsible for the overall accounting operations of the Division, which includes the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate financial reporting risk and ensure that reported results comply with general accounting principles and international financial reporting standards. This Division is made up of a number of existing Mitie businesses as well as the development of the Consulting and Connected Workspace propositions.


Job objectives and responsibilities


  • Work alongside the PUBLIC Finance Director, Managing Director, finance and operations teams to ensure business objectives and strategy are designed and delivered
  • Ensuring Operational review meetings happen on a monthly or more frequent basis to ensure that the Operational teams understand the financial and commercial performance, and optimise performance and meet PUBLIC and mitie group targets and KPI's
  • Ownership and sign off of the PUBLIC monthly management accounts (P & L, balance sheet. Cash flow) within the PUBLIC month end and Group timetables
  • Preparation and sign off of budgets, forecasts and analytical information in accordance with the PUBLIC and Group timetables
  • Line management responsibility as appropriate
  • Supporting the Operational leads in the development of any investment, and ensuring there are appropriate processes and controls in place
  • Ensure the Operational leads provide correct and timely information flows to maximise the accuracy of the first draft and final management accounts (P & L and balance sheet)
  • Provide Ad Hoc commercial and financial support to the PUBLIC operational teams appropriate to the relevant contract life-cycle stage (e.g. bid, mobilisation, change of contractual terms, re-tender or demobilisation) and during times of commercial dispute.
  • Support client interactions as appropriate as a senior member of the PUBLIC management team.
  • Ensure that robust financial control and governance is in place and aligned to the Group controls
  • Monitor and analyse compliance across PUBLIC against the above.
  • Direct and drive a programme of continuous improvement with the aim of delivering more efficient and cost effective transaction processing
  • Act as the conduit across the senior finance team and key senior business stakeholders to ensure the activities and processes within PUBLIC are aligned to the Group's strategic goals and financial requirements
  • Support and drive the operational teams to continually improve and maximise the working capital position of PUBLIC through strong revenue cycle management activity, dispute resolution and process improvements
  • Provide commercial support to the operation with regard to procurement and cost control, including interaction with internal and external suppliers on behalf of PUBLIC as appropriate. Review of the PUBLIC supplier payment run.
  • Contribute to the M.I. and Reporting design and build requirements to ensure they meet the financial and commercial needs of the business.
  • Supporting the implementation of any new I.T. operational platform as required.
  • Interacting with and responding to formal and informal Central Finance requests for information within designated deadlines, including but not limited to internal and external audit queries.
  • As a Division delivering and receiving services internationally ensure all local legal and financial requirements are in place and followed accordingly. Flag any non compliance as appropriate to ensure timely resolution, with no interruption to operational delivery.
  • Ensure a high performance culture is embedded across the PUBLIC finance team and effectively performance manage and develop direct reports, ensuring effective contingency and succession planning

  • Qualified Accountant - ACA
