This isn't a role that will suit 100% of financial controllers. But if you enjoy the buzz that comes with being part of a growing business and you're ambitious about progressing your career, it could very well be the best job you've ever had.

Utility Alliance - an award-winning, nationally recognised, Energy Consultancy - didn't get to be a Sunday Times Top 100 employer by playing it safe. When they launched the company in 2015, the directors set out to create a distinctive, dynamic sales culture. Success is encouraged, supported and well rewarded - incentives range from parmos and pizzas in the office to trips to Las Vegas and Monaco.

It's not for everyone but for people who want to stretch themselves and achieve something professionally, it's a great place to work - and that's official.

What you can add

The business has grown fast. Today they have 9000+ customers and more than 400 employees in three locations across the north of England. Last year, turnover rose by more than a third, to £21.2m. That's a lot of financial transactions - which is where you come in.

You'll report to the Finance Director and lead a nine-strong finance team who take care of everything from accounts, VAT and HMRC liaison to payroll and commissions.

What's different about this job?

It's a brand new role. You're not filling someone else's shoes. You'll define what this job means to the business. You'll make it your own.

There's plenty of room for ideas and improvement - for example to working practices and financial controls. There's scope here to make a personal impact.

Beyond that, you'll be joining a business with a positive proposition -

helping organisations of all shapes and sizes to save time and money on their utility bills.

About you

Like Utility Alliance, you're probably on a growth trajectory. You could be a Finance Manager or Financial Controller who's tired of your current routine in search of something more engaging. Or this could be the ideal step-up to a leadership role.

Fully qualified (ACA, ACCA or CIMA), your CV shows you can produce budgets (up to £multi-millions), run an annual audit and handle forecasting, and monthly reporting. Beyond that, we're looking for the ability (or potential) to contribute to financial planning and analysis and to keep improving accounting practices.

You'll need versatile people skills too. On one hand, that means the self-assurance and integrity to report into senior leaders and guide your team forward. On the other, you'll need the confidence and charisma to work with competitive salespeople - if their hard-earned commission is a penny out, you can bet they'll want to talk to you.
