LEAD GREATNESS - be a Governor at one of the top performing colleges in Wales

Every year Coleg Gwent helps around 17,000 learners achieve their goals through a diverse range of provision that includes full time, part time, community and employer based education and training. Our outcomes are consistently excellent and above Welsh and UK national comparators in both academic and vocational subjects.

We are an ambitious college and want to continue building on our success. We’ve invested in cutting edge technologies and worked hard to develop effective partnerships whilst also introducing new and innovative teaching models and expanding our range of provision. With a new post-16 centre opening in Cwmbran in September 2020 and other exciting developments and commercial ventures in the pipeline, our vision is to be THE College of Choice.  Our Board of Governors provides the strong and effective leadership needed to achieve this vision.

The Board works closely with the senior management team and is responsible for setting the educational character and mission of the College and for monitoring progress against strategic objectives. With an annual turnover of c£57m, the Board also has responsibility for ensuring long-term financial sustainability, setting annual budgets and ensuring the appropriate use of public funds. Governors act as a ‘critical friend’ to the management team, taking a strategic overview and asking challenging questions. You need to be ambitious with us and most importantly, you should be enthusiastic about the contribution education and training makes to our communities and the wider regional economy.

At this time we are particularly keen to hear from those with a background in finance, accounting and audit, although we welcome interest from any individual with senior management, leadership or business experience.

Governors must be prepared to attend a minimum of one meeting a month and to allow additional preparation time. You’ll be encouraged to engage in suitable training opportunities and to take an interest in the wider life of the College by attending events such as competitions, performances and awards evenings. This voluntary role is not remunerated, but reasonable travel expenses can be reimbursed.

The Coleg Gwent Corporation Board is committed to the principles of equality and diversity. All Governors are appointed on merit on the basis of experience and skills and the contribution they can make to the work of the Board.
