We are looking for a Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees. If you are enthusiastic about making a positive difference to those with a neurological condition and willing to work as part of a small, dynamic team we would like to hear from you. The role involves oversight of the financial management and reporting of the charity, acting as Chair of the Investment Committee and reporting to the Board on a quarterly basis.

This is a voluntary role of Treasurer - non-executive member of the Board of Trustees.

Strategic leadership

  • To provide leadership to the organisation by determining the vision and strategic objectives
  • To question appropriately, but to share collective responsibility for decisions
  • To be well informed about our purpose, services and strategies, and our operating environment
  • To uphold and promote our values

External and internal relations

  • To challenge and support the CEO appropriately
  • To represent BRUK and speak on our behalf when asked to do so by the Chair
  • To develop and maintain good relationships with our key stakeholders

Responsibilities and duties 

  • To oversee the financial management and reporting of the charity, for which day-to-day responsibility for execution lies with the CEO supported by a Finance Manager. ‘Oversight’ means ensuring that the charity’s finances are managed effectively and its financial reporting is balanced, true and fair
  • Oversee the key financial management decisions and/or processes of BRUK, particularly ensuring that:
    • Budgetary control, including forecasting of results, is robust yet proportionate to the performance management needs of the charity
    • The charity manages its cash effectively
    • The charity has and follows reserves and investment policies relevant to the prudent execution of its strategy and plans
    • The investment manager’s performance is subject to appropriate scrutiny and challenge
    • The charity has an effective system of identifying, managing and reporting its risks to the Board
  • Oversee the external financial reporting, ensuring particularly that:
    • The charity’s external financial statements disclose its results and financial position truly and fairly
    • Liaison with auditors is effective
    • The Auditors’ recommendations for improvements in controls are acted on appropriately
  • Chair the Investment Committee (ICo)

Knowledge and experience

  • Significant experience in the following areas is essential for the role:
    • deploying the financial management skills required by the role
    • investment management
  • Successful experience of operating at senior level with a charitable, public sector or commercial organisation
  • Demonstrable experience of building and sustaining high-value relationships with stakeholders and colleagues tohelp achieve organisational change and objectives

  • BRUK will pay out of pocket expenses to cover reasonable and necessary travel costs incurred while acting on behalf
  • of the charity.
  • A suitable induction programme will be arranged.
