The primary function of the Financial Controller is to oversee the collection, analysis and
consolidation of financial data and to assist the Business Director in the effective management of an
organisation’s finances. Our Financial Controller will play a key role in the development and
maintenance of financial controls, processes and systems and ensure that these are in line with
statutory requirements.
Our Financial Controller will act as a valuable link between a company’s financial and leadership
team; therefore, they must have strong communication skills. They need to clearly communicate
financial information to senior leadership and must have the ability to build strong relationships with
key stakeholders. The successful Financial Controller candidate will have various prerequisite skills
and qualifications that typically include the following.
Requirements
• Using financial modelling to simulate potential scenarios • Performing financial analysis on the company to predict financial health
• Monitoring spending and creating budgets
• Preparing company reports for P&L’s and accountancy reviews
• Finding ways to reduce costs and increase profits
• Collaborating with management to create funding strategies
• Ensuring adherence to national and international financial regulations
• Analysing company budgets to compile financial reports
• Analysing existing financial systems and procedures within a company and providing
recommendations for improvements
• Compiling financial data and producing financial graphs from the results
• Keeping up to date on the latest markets trends and economic news
• Staying informed of financial regulations and legalities and working within them
• A practical understanding of management accounting principles and techniques
• Sound knowledge of standard accountancy and finance best practices
• Solid IT skills, including proficiency in the relevant accounting packages
• Strong analytical skills to effectively analyse financial reports
• In-depth knowledge of budgeting and financial forecasting
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience within a similar role.
• Understand utilities sector - desirable
• Ideally educated to degree level in accounting, economics, finance or a related field. A master’s
qualification, such as a master’s in business administration (MBA) or a master’s degree in accounting
is desirable, as this level of education provides in-depth and specialist knowledge in key areas.
• A member of one of the following professional bodies - the Association of Chartered Certified
Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) or the Institute of
Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)
• Strong skills in MS Office; specifically, PowerPoint, Word & Excel
• Experience reporting into director level/ senior leadership teams.
