First Citizens Bank offers an exciting summer internship program that provides development opportunities and hands on work experience while creating a talent pipeline for the Bank. Our interns will apply classroom knowledge in a corporate environment while making a positive impact across the organization and the communities we serve. Responsibilities

In this role, you will:
  • Be part of a dynamic team with interesting projects. Accountabilities can and may include areas such as research, analytics, projects, strategy, process review and improvement, as well as technology enhancements and support.
  • Attend professional development sessions, informational sessions, networking and community service events.
  • Have a dedicated manager and program manager to help you navigate the bank and the internship program.
  • Be assigned a project, designed to improve a specific process or solve a problem that you will present at the close of the internship.
  • Prepare a wrap-up presentation to be shared with the division leader and other key stakeholders in the company to outline your accomplishments and experience during the internship

Specifically, you will be part of the Bank's Modeling & Analytics team. The internship will provide the opportunity to work on tier 1&2 models that are being used at the Bank. Below are some of the areas that will be the focus of the internship.

Skills to be applied and strengthened,
  • Coding (Python/R): write model development code and test cases in the sandbox environment
  • SQL: query the data for model development, testing, and other analyses
  • Excel: perform supporting analyses and summarize modeling results
  • Critical thinking and problem solving: overcome issues like lack of data or constraints like model interpretability
  • Communication: communicate with other teams and stakeholders to resolve the issues and present the results

Knowledge to be expanded,
  • Domain knowledge: credit risk modeling, banking products and operations
  • Real-life model development: how banking operations and regulations impact a model's development requirements
  • Model development lifecycle: all the systems and stakeholders involved in the life of a model from when it was developed to when it was deployed in production environment.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED and 1 year of experience
  • Currently enrolled at an accredited collegiate institution (during the time of the summer program)
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week during the duration of the program

  • 3.0 minimum GPA
  • Strong desire to learn and grow
  • Possess a positive attitude, naturally curious and enjoys collaborating with others
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Ability to multitask
  • Ability to adapt and adjust priorities based on business needs
  • Ability to take direction and absorb information quickly
  • Knowledge of Python, SQL, and Excel that has been applied to actual projects, in school or at work.
  • Undergraduate degree with relevance working experiences, or master's degree candidate (to finish year 1 at the start of the internship), in Financial Engineering, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Economics, Data Science, and other domains that support the training of required skills.
  • Highly self-sufficient (proactive, independent, and resourceful) while being a good team player (collaborative, open-minded, responsible, and accountable)
  • Prior work experience as a modeling/quantitative analyst or consultant, especially in the financial service industry
  • Proficient in Python, SQL, and Excel
  • Knowledge of credit risk modeling (CECL)
  • Strong desire to learn and grow

The base pay for this position is generally between $22.44 and $34.32. Actual starting base pay will be determined based on skills, experience, location, and other non-discriminatory factors permitted by law. For some roles, total compensation may also include variable incentives, bonuses, benefits, and/or other awards as outlined in the offer of employment.
