The Senior Operational Controller - Testing has overall responsibility for the accurate and timely accounting of operational transactions for a number of Testing businesses within PTSG and providing insightful reporting and analysis. This is a senior finance role that will be part of the Group Finance team as well as being a key business partner to a number of Testing businesses, working with senior operational staff and managing two Operational Controllers.
The role will primarily focus on ensuring accurate reporting of revenue, accrued income, materials, inventory and related direct costs to ensure that Gross Margin is accurately recorded in line with relevant accounting standards. Some businesses also in addition to Testing carry out remedial work and smaller project type work and therefore a basic understanding of Project Accounting is advantageous. Detailed financial analysis and reports will be produced on the profitability of each business.
Key Accountabilities (major end results the job is expected to achieve):
• Leadership / Management: Coach, develop and manage the performance of a small team of Operational Controllers, as well as acting as mentor/coach to the wider finance team.
• Periodic accounting: to ensure income and costs recognised in accordance with accounting standards and ensure accrued / deferred income and costs captured correctly. Review income and cost postings made by team to ensure that accurate reporting of periodic financials. Provision of relevant financial analysis on the profitability and efficiency of each business, including variance analysis of actual versus budget/forecast. Within the Testing businesses there are high volume of low value transactions.
• Management Accounts: review of relevant Management Accounts to ensure accurate and complete. Provision of relevant analysis and commentary on overall financial result, including deeper dive into service lines and type of work performed. This includes P&L, balance sheet and cash flow statements.
• Business Partnering: Work with and support Divisional Directors in ensuring accurate business reporting and good operational/cost control. Presentation of results and financial analysis to Divisional Directors and Senior Group Finance.
• Revenue recognition: ensure that all revenue recognised is in line with relevant accounting standards and local group policies. Ensure relevant booking of revenue provisions each period in line with group policy and review of teams outputs to ensure accurate accounting and reporting of revenue.
• Balance sheet: Full ownership of relevant balance sheets, including reconciliations and supporting documentation. Implementation of regular reviews of balance sheet reconciliations and related controls to ensure team are reporting accurate balance sheet positions. Key focus on ensuring any accrued/deferred income or costs are appropriately recognised and reported accurately.
Person Profile (Qualifications, Knowledge, Skill and Experience):
• Qualified Accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA)
• Proven experience of both management and financial accounting
• Strong business partnering skills with the ability to engage, challenge and influence others at a senior stakeholder level through verbal and written communication
• Highly credible and able to quickly build effective working relationships
• Analytical, accurate and detailed
• Experience of managing and coaching other Finance team members
• Develop and implement best practice processes and controls
• System orientated with excellent IT skills (PTSG is a Sage Accounting environment and the individual must have an advanced Excel capability)
• Experience of working with operational and financial systems, in particular linking of these to ensure complete and accurate financial reporting
• Resilience, flexibility and a willingness to be ‘hands on’ are all important personal characteristics
• Previous experience of acquisition integration would be advantageous but not essential
