POSITION PURPOSE:
The Controller will play a crucial role in managing the organization's financial health and ensuring its long-term sustainability. This position is responsible for overseeing all finance, accounting, and reporting activities. The Controller will support presentations to the board finance and audit committees and work closely with the senior leadership team. The Controller will ensure that One Tree Planted has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. This role is essential in partnering with program leaders to educate them on finance and accounting procedures and exploring how the finance function can support program operations.
Reporting Relationships:
- Reports to our Chief Financial Officer/Chief Operating Officer (CFO/COO)
- APPROXIMATE NUMBER OF DIRECT REPORTS: Three (3)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION
Finance and Accounting Leadership
- Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain internal controls and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
- Coordinate all annual audit activity and filing of Form 990.
- Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep CFO/COO and senior leadership abreast of the organization's financial status.
- Assist in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
- Support the CFO/COO in engaging the board’s audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
- Oversee all financial, project/program, and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for corporate and foundation grants.
- Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the CFO/COO and continuously collaborate to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations.
- Oversee and optimize the accounts payable and receivable process to ensure efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.
Team Leadership:
- Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities, and develop and implement training programs to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
- Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN ACCOUNTING, FINANCE OR RELATED FIELD; CPA PREFERRED.
RELATED EXPERIENCE: 7-10 years of related experience, including experience in accounting and audit, followed by experience in gathering, evaluating, presenting, and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders.
SKILLS:
- Solid experience coordinating audit activities and working with external accountants to prepare Form 990 for filing. Significant experience managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll and accounting.
- A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of corporate and foundation grants.
- Technology savvy with advanced knowledge of Excel as well as accounting and reporting software. Experience with Salesforce and Accounting Seed is a plus, though not required.
- Commitment to mentoring, training and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly.
- Keen analytic, organizational, and problem solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating complex financial data at all levels (to both finance and non finance managers), including presentation to senior management, board and other outside partners.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
COMPENSATION: typical starting range is $90,000 to $120,000 USD which will be based on location, skills and experience.
