If you offer expertise and analytical experience in either Business, Finance, Economics or Accounting, this position offers an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in a recently established centre of excellence for technical financial analysis.

Join the Competition and Regulatory Finance team at the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) at a time when the UK economy faces unprecedented challenges, such as the rising cost of living, and make a real impact on the lives of millions of people.

About the CMA

We help people, businesses, and the UK economy by promoting competitive markets and tackling unfair behaviour. Our work is wide ranging, ambitious and often new and challenging.

The Competition and Regulatory Finance team is responsible for providing high-quality financial and commercial analysis to inform effective interventions in markets, influence policies and protect both consumers and businesses.

What you will do

The role brings the opportunity to deliver financial and commercial analysis on a variety of CMA cases, such as market and merger cases, regulatory appeals, and competition and consumer enforcement.

You will be working with a thriving and growing group of around 130 economists, econometricians, data scientists and statisticians, based in our offices in London, Cardiff, Darlington, Edinburgh, and Manchester.

Some examples of the analytical work you will lead in this role may include but are not limited to: assessing appropriate rates of return in the context of a regulatory redetermination or for a particular sector under investigation; assessing firms’ financial performance (including conducting economic profitability analysis); analysing firms’ cost structures and business plans; analysing firms’ corporate finance decisions and options; or looking at firms’ strategic business choices, such as entering or exiting a market.

You will work with CMA colleagues in multi-disciplinary project teams, either across multiple projects or on a single, more complex, case at a time. You will lead the financial and commercial input on a case, by developing the scope of the work, conducting and supervising quantitative analysis, providing financial and commercial insights, assuring the quality of the work, and managing project risks.

You may also play a role in finding and implementing effective, real-world solutions to the problems we find.

You will also contribute to the management and intellectual development of the team and the wider business and finance professional community.

What you will need

A post-graduate business, finance, economics or accounting qualification (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CFA, MSc or MBA) or equivalent professional experience is essential.

You will also need significant financial and/or commercial analytical experience; preferably including experience in regulatory finance, conducting economic profitability assessments, understanding business models in different industries, in addition to evidence of accounting knowledge and numeracy.

The ability to form and develop constructive working relationships with key stakeholders and communicate and present technical and complex analysis to non-technical audiences is equally important.

What we can offer you

In return the CMA is a hugely diverse, rewarding and stimulating place to work - an opportunity to work for the public good and to stretch and develop yourself in doing so. We offer generous benefits, including an excellent pension scheme, at least 25 days leave (increasing to 30 over five years), and generous maternity/paternity leave provision. You can also take advantage of interest-free season ticket loans, a cycle to work scheme, our employee assistance programme and flexible working options.
