Description

Brief description

The main purpose of this position is to assist in the development of regulatory frameworks and conduct financial sector prudential policy-related research, including analysis to monitor and influence the policy positions of international financial sector standard-setting bodies as well as the domestic financial sector policy framework.

Detailed description

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:
  • Assist in conducting research based on international best practice and practices in other jurisdictions that are similar to the South African market to better inform the development of a robust regulatory framework for South Africa.
  • Participate in industry engagement sessions as well as engagements with other financial sector regulators and internal stakeholders in the development of regulatory frameworks for the Prudential Authority (PA).
  • Assist in the development of regulatory frameworks for the PA by working closely with senior executives in the PA's Policy Division.
  • Assist in engagements with regulated financial institutions, where required.
  • Provide secretariat support for the governance structures within the PA.
  • Provide input into the areas of policy development for the PA, which will specifically include, but not be limited to, work on the insurance regulatory framework.


Qualifications

Job requirements

To be considered for this position, candidates must be in possession of:
  • a postgraduate qualification in Law, Finance, Economics or an equivalent qualification; and
  • a minimum of two to five years' experience in conducting policy-related research, drafting regulatory instruments or formulating policy and analytical skills in a relevant field.

The following would be an added advantage:
  • practical experience in the insurance regulatory environment; and
  • practical experience in conducting research, and demonstrable drafting and analysis skills in the financial sector.
    • an understanding of developments in recent financial sector reforms;

Job-related skills and attributes include:
  • an understanding of prudential supervision, regulation and legislation impacting the PA;
  • a basic understanding of international regulatory standards impacting the South African Reserve Bank (SARB)/PA;
  • competence in the use of Microsoft Office (MS) software packages;
  • the ability to be proactive and work independently;
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills; and
  • the ability to work well under pressure.


The SARB offers remuneration and benefits commensurate with the level of the position and in line with the market. The level at which the successful applicant will be appointed will depend on his/her competence and experience.
